Abstract
Parents have reported a variety of experiences leading to the diag-nosis of DMD, ranging from inadvertent identification of DMD while conducting tests for other medical conditions, to full clinical work-up at neuromuscular centers. Parents have also encountered it is not sufficient if clinics are structured in a way that inhibits dia-logue. The setting of the visit, who else is in the room (e.g., number of interns), perceptions of physician concern and empathy for the family, and ensuring that all of the parents or other important fam-ily members normally responsible for directly caring for the child are present for important discussions about the diagnosis and treatment are only a few of the variables which can impact the quality of information gleaned from any medical visit, including the time of initial diagnosis.
