Color, Context, and Compositionality∗

by Christopher Kennedy, Louise Mcnally , 2008
"... Abstract Color adjectives have played a central role in work on language typol-ogy and variation, but there has been relatively little investigation of their actual meanings by researchers in formal semantics. This is particularly surprising given the fact that color terms have been at the center of ..."

This paper examines whether cross-listing in the U.S. reduces foreign firms ’ cost of capital. While prior studies document that U.S. cross-listings are associated with substantial increases in firm value, the sources of these valuation effects are not well understood. We estimate the cost of capital effects implied by market prices and analyst forecasts, which allows us to explicitly account for changes in growth expectations around cross-listings. We find strong evidence that firms with cross-listings on U.S. exchanges experience a decrease in their cost of capital, which is economically significant and sustained. Consistent with the bonding hypothesis, we document that these effects are larger for firms from countries with weaker institutional structures. Cross-listings in the over-the-counter market are associated with minor reductions in firms ’ cost of capital, and private placements seem to have adverse effects. We also document positive valuation effects for all types of U.S. cross-listings stemming from changes in (financial analysts’) growth expectations. The latter result could reflect that firms seek to cross-list when

In this thesis, two sets of experimental studies in bosonic and fermionic gases are described. In the first part of the thesis, itinerant ferromagnetism was studied in a strongly interacting Fermi gas of ultracold atoms. The observation of nonmonotonic behavior of lifetime, kinetic energy, and size for increasing repulsive interactions pro-vides strong evidence for a phase transition to a ferromagnetic state. Our observations imply that itinerant ferromagnetism of delocalized fermions is possible without lattice and band structure, and our data validate the most basic model for ferromagnetism introduced by Stoner. In the second part of the thesis, the coherence properties of a Bose-Einstein con-densate (BEC) was studied in a radio frequency induced double-well potential imple-mented on a microfabricated atom chip. We observed phase coherence between the separated condensates for times up to 200 ms after splitting, a factor of 10 longer than the phase diffusion time expected for a coherent state for our experimental con-ditions. The enhanced coherence time is attributed to number squeezing of the initial
