the drinking water industry. We lost one of our most valuable assets— Larry Rader—who passed away that morning. We will miss him. Larry was a one-man operation who helped as many people as he could. He had a knack for telling a story and was an exceptional writer. His talent didn't stop there, though. As a circuit rider, Larry helped thousands of people in West Virginia. Later, as a contribut-ing writer for On Tap magazine, he helped thousands of people around the U.S. One thing that always impressed us at the National Drinking Water Clearinghouse about Larry was the gift he had for translating years of practical experience into a readable article. He could take the most colorless topic and infuse it with his unique take on life and make it interesting to read. He was pas-sionate about water and rural America. Plumbing cross connections can link a potable water supply to a contamination source, causing a serious public health hazard. Cross connections can be controlled, but it takes vigilance and knowledge to carry out a good cross-connection control program. This poster illustrates some mechanical devises and methods used to control cross connections in commercial and industrial applications as well as for homeowners. 14

Certain U.S. drinking water regulations have the potential to conflict with each other. This means that small system operators cannot simply comply with these mandates individually, but must consider how changing their treatment process to meet one rule might affect compliance with other rules. This Tech Brief provides information and strategies to effectively comply with those regulations that are most likely to conflict with one another.
