A Meta-Analytic Review of Experiments Examining the Effects of Extrinsic Rewards on Intrinsic Motivation
"... A meta-analysis of 128 studies examined the effects of extrinsic rewards on intrinsic motivation. As predicted, engagement-contingent, completion-contingent, and performance-contingent rewards signifi-cantly undermined free-choice intrinsic motivation (d =-0.40,-0.36, and-0.28, respectively), as did ..."

Iterative (turbo) soft interference cancellation and decoding for coded CDMA
- IEEE Trans. Commun
, 1999
"... Abstract — The presence of both multiple-access interference (MAI) and intersymbol interference (ISI) constitutes a major impediment to reliable communications in multipath code-division multiple-access (CDMA) channels. In this paper, an iterative receiver structure is proposed for decoding multiuse ..."

. Moreover, at high signal-to-noise ratio, the detrimental effects of MAI and ISI in the channel can almost be completely overcome by iterative processing, and single-user performance can be approached. Index Terms — Coded CDMA, instantaneous MMSE filtering, multiuser detection, soft interference
The Sybil attack in sensor networks: Analysis & Defenses
- THIRD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON INFORMATION PROCESSING IN SENSOR NETWORKS, IPSN, 26 – 27 APRIL 2004 PAGE(S): 259 – 268
, 2004
"... Security is important for many sensor network applications. A particularly harmful attack against sensor and ad hoc networks is known as the Sybil attack [6], where a node illegitimately claims multiple identities. This paper system-atically analyzes the threat posed by the Sybil attack to wireless ..."

sensor networks. We demonstrate that the attack can be exceedingly detrimental to many important functions of the sensor network such as routing, resource allocation, misbehavior detection, etc. We establish a classification of different types of the Sybil attack, which enables us to bet-ter understand
Detrimental effects of reward: reality or myth
- American Psychologist
, 1996
"... Based on seemingly overwhelming empirical evidence of the decremental effects of reward on intrinsic task interest and creativity, the use of reward to alter human behavior has been challenged in literature reviews, textbooks, and the popular media. An analysis of a quarter century of research on in ..."

Three Lessons for Monetary Policy in a Low Inflation Era
, 1999
"... The zero lower bound on nominal interest rates constrains the central bank's ability to stimulate the economy during downturns. We use the FRB/US model to quantify the effects of the bound on macroeconomic stabilization and to explore how policy can be designed to minimize these effects. During ..."

Health promotion from the perspective of social cognitive theory.
- Psychology and Health,
, 1998
"... Abstract This chapter examines health promotion and disease prevention from the perspective of social cognitive theory. This theory posits a multifaceted causal structure in which self-efficacy beliefs operate in concert with cognized goals, outcome expectations, and perceived environmental impedim ..."

Addressing the Curse of Imbalanced Training Sets: One-Sided Selection
- In Proceedings of the Fourteenth International Conference on Machine Learning
, 1997
"... Adding examples of the majority class to the training set can have a detrimental effect on the learner's behavior: noisy or otherwise unreliable examples from the majority class can overwhelm the minority class. The paper discusses criteria to evaluate the utility of classifiers induced f ..."

Parental employment and child cognitive development
- Journal of Human Resources
, 2004
"... This study investigates how parental employment affects child cognitive development. The results indicate that maternal labor supply during the first three years of the child's life has a small negative effect on the predicted verbal ability of 3 and 4 year olds and a larger detrimental impact ..."

Quantum random walks - an introductory overview
- Contemporary Physics
, 2003
"... This article aims to provide an introductory survey on quantum random walks. Starting from a physical effect to illustrate the main ideas we will introduce quantum random walks, review some of their properties and outline their striking differences to classical walks. We will touch upon both physica ..."

people have been puzzled by the counter-intuitive character of the laws of nature. Over time we have learned to accept more and more effects that are unimaginable in a classical Newtonian world. Modern technology exploits quantum effects both to our benefit and detriment—among the memorable examples we

For many years, environmental agencies have sought to improve the water quality of lakes and estuaries by reducing inputs of phosphorus. New research indicates that we must reduce both phosphorus and nitrogen to reverse eutrophica-tion symptoms. Nutrients are chemical elements that influence the productivity of all ecosystems. Nitrogen and phosphorus are two nutrients that are essential for the growth and survival of plants and animals, but often are present in short supply. Both nitrogen and phosphorus are applied regularly through fertilizer to increase the yield of crops needed to feed human populations. Fertilizers also are used widely for residential and commercial landscaping purposes.
