Abstract
: A new dynamic systems modeling approach, based on self-organizing neural networks, is presented. An adaptive control strategy that utilizes this modeling method is proposed, and it is experimented in the control of a pH process plant. Keywords: pH process, process identification, adaptive control, self-organizing maps. 1. INTRODUCTION The practical pH processes are highly nonlinear and time-varying, and the control of these processes is a difficult task. The theoretical principles of the pH dynamics are well-known (see McAvoy et al., 1972; Jutila and Orava, 1981; Gustafsson and Waller, 1983). Because of the wide variation range of dynamic behavior, adaptive control strategies are needed (for example, see Lee et al., 1994; Yln and Jutila, 1996; for a general view of adaptive control, see Isermann et al., 1992).
