Abstract
On a regular basis, the main surveys of the NLSY79 have collected information on the experiences of NLSY79 women as they became mothers, including the birth and early childhood of their children. In 1982, the National Longitudinal Surveys (NLS) program obtained funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) to expand the collection of fertility information from NLSY79 women; in 1983, NICHD provided funds for prenatal care questions. Collection of data on children of NLSY79 women was further expanded in 1986, when NICHD began sponsoring a set of supplemental surveys to gather a large amount of information about the lives of these children. A battery of child assessments, cognitive, socioemotional, and physiological has been administered biennially since 1986 to obtain NLSY79 mothers and their children. Since 1988,
