Abstract
I am writing on behalf of Ms. Dongbin Kim, a doctoral candidate at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, who has applied for an AIR dissertation grant. I have known Ms. Kim since 1998 when she came to UCLA. Since then I have been her advisor and am now serving as chair of her dissertation committee. So, I have had ample opportunity to observe Ms. Kim from a variety of viewpoints and am happy to write on her behalf. In her first year she finished all of the requirements for her master’s degree, while learning the fine points of the language and customs (and how to get around in Los Angeles!). She quickly found the topic that she decided to delve into – the impact of student loans on degree attainment. As you know, this is a topic of considerable significance because of the enormous investment in student loans, and because so little is really known about the impact of the policy. Using NCES data, Ms. Kim plans to use hierarchical non-linear modeling to analyze not only borrowers ’ success in attaining degrees (of which some has been written), but the little known impact of interaction effects between students ’ race and SES – and how this pattern varies by institutions ’ selectivity and
