The application of the methods of statistical mechanics to the description of the motion of fluid particles, i.e. to the Lagrangian dynamics, has led to a new quantitative theory of intermittency in turbulent transport. The first analytical description of anomalous scaling laws in turbulence has been obtained. The underlying physical mechanism reveals the role of statistical integrals of motion in nonequilibrium systems. For turbulent transport, the statistical conservation laws are hidden in the evolution of groups of fluid particles and arise from the competition between the expansion of a group and the change of its geometry. By breaking the scaleinvariance symmetry, the statistically conserved quantities lead to the observed anomalous scaling of transported fields. Lagrangian methods also shed new light on some practical issues, such as mixing and turbulent magnetic dynamo. 1 n4oqpsrutKpsrwv

In a type secure persistent programming system, all data is governed for its entire lifetime by a single type system. The universality of the persistent type system has implications in terms of both the modelling and protection provided by the type system itself, and also presents some new challenges in terms of implementation. With respect to modelling, the persistent type system must be sufficiently flexible to allow the modelling of activities normally provided by untyped support systems. Such activities include, for example, the linking of separately prepared program units, and file system access protection. Methods of achieving such flexibility whilst maximising safety include the controlled use of infinite unions, parametric and inclusion polymorphism. With respect to protection, the increased role of a type system means that any protection mechanisms programmed at a high level may be fully relied upon to protect the data for its lifetime, as access from outside the constraints...

This paper presents a taxonomy of finite automata construction algorithms. Each algorithm is classified into one of two families: those based upon the structure of regular expressions, and those based upon the automatatheoretic work of Myhill and Nerode. Many of the algorithms appearing in the literature are based upon the structure of regular expressions. In this paper, we make this term precise by defining regular expressions as a \Sigmaterm algebra, and automata constructions as various \Sigmaalgebras of automata. Each construction algorithm is then presented as the unique natural homomorphism from the \Sigmaterm algebra of regular expressions to the appropriate \Sigmaalgebra of automata. The concept of duality is introduced and used to derive more practical construction algorithms. In this way, we successfully present (and relate) algorithms given by Thompson, Berry and Sethi, McNaughton and Yamada, Glushkov, and Aho, Sethi, and Ullman. Efficient implementations (including thos...

We consider the NavierStokes equation on a two dimensional torus with a random force, white noise in time and analytic in space, for arbitrary Reynolds number R. We prove probabilistic estimates for the long time behaviour of the solutions that imply bounds for the dissipation scale and energy spectrum as R → ∞. 1

Summary: Decreases in the glutathione peroxidase activity and in the selenium content were found in the plasma of pregnant women as compared with a control group. In the erythrocytes, both parameters remained unchanged. In both groups a fraction of about 0.90 of the glutathione peroxidase in the blood, was contained in the erythrocytes, whereas the selenium was nearly evenly distributed between plasma and red blood cells. A positive correlation existed between the total amount of selenium in the erythrocytes and that in the plasma. A bipartite covering of order k of the complete graph Kn on n vertices is a collection of complete bipartite graphs so that every edge of Kn lies in at least 1 and at most k of them. It is shown that the minimum possible number of subgraphs in such a collection is Θ(kn 1/k). This extends a result of Graham and Pollak, answers a question of Felzenbaum and Perles, and has some geometric consequences. The proofs combine combinatorial techniques with some simple linear algebraic tools.

This quantitative study examines the practices and beliefs of administrators and teachers regarding parent involvement in an urban school district following the first year of the implementation of an action plan based on six national standards for parent involvement (National PTA, 1997). The theoretical framework is based upon Bandura’s social cognitive theory of selfefficacy. Administrators and teachers from an urban school district were surveyed. The instrument used for this study was adapted from “The Parent Involvement Inventory ” published by the Illinois State Board of Education (1994). A twotailed ttest was conducted and findings indicate some statistically significant differences between many beliefs and practices. The results of this study show a mismatch between teachers ’ and administrators ’ beliefs and practices about parent involvement. Although teachers and administrators have strong beliefs about parent involvement and its importance in strengthening student achievement, what they practice in their schools and classrooms is not congruent with these beliefs.

We consider realanalytic couplings of a direct product of uniformly analytic and expanding circle maps. We show that when the coupling is suciently small the dynamical system carries a natural invariant measure which is ergodic and for which time correlations decay exponentially fast. When a spatial decay of the couplings is present this is reected in a spatial decay of correlations in the marginal densities of the invariant measure, e.g. polynomial decay may arise from a polynomial decay of the couplings. The allowable couplings include sums of pair, or more generally, npoint, interactions whose norms are summable with a small enough sum. The space of couplings and the observable algebra are Banach algebras of functions which are analytic in in nitely many variables.
