The Sources of Welfare Disparities Across and Within Regions of Brazil: Evidence from the 2002-03 POF
"... Brazil’s inequalities in welfare and poverty between and within regions can be accounted by differences in household attributes and returns to those attributes. Using Blinder-Oaxaca decompositions at the mean as well as at different quantiles of welfare distributions on regionally representative hou ..."

household survey data (2002-03 POF), this paper finds that household attributes account for most of the welfare differences between urban and rural areas within regions. However, comparing the lagging Northeast region with the leading Southeast region, differences in returns to attributes account for a

After World War II, many LDCs adopted various measures to industrialize their economies. However, except for a small number of economies in East Asia, the gaps between LDCs and DCs have enlarged. How to catch up with the DCs is still a daunting challenge after the development pursues of several generations in many LDCs. Recent studies find that the poor development performance in LDCs is largely attributable to their problems in institutions, including all kinds of market distortions and government interventions. Following the policy advice, capsulized in Washington consensus, LDCs both in the socialist and non-socialist groups started to reform their institutions in the early 1980s. However, the growth performance of most LDCs has deteriorated further. The LDCs faces another challenge of how to achieve dynamic development by successfully reforming their economies. In this paper, we argue that the poor growth performance of LDCs after World War II can be largely explained by their adoption of an inappropriate development strategy. Motivated by nation building, most LDCs, including the socialist countries, adopted a

"... We study a plane circular model of a frictional fault using numerical methods. The model is dynamic since we specify the effective stress at the fault. In one model we assume that the fault appears instantaneously in the medium; in another, that the rupture nucleates at the center and that rupture p ..."

. The central region includes the corner frequency and is quite complicated. The corner frequency is shown to be inversely proportional to the width of the far-field displacement pulse which, in turn, is related to the time lag between the stopping phases. The average corner frequency of S waves o0 s is related
