ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my advisor, Bruce Jentleson, for his insight, encouragement, and willingness to work over email while we were in separate corners of the globe. I am also grateful for the contributions of my committee members, Catherine Admay and Gunther Peck, who added clarity and direction to the project. This project would not have been possible without the willingness of the interviewees, who responded to cold emails, worked with me to schedule interviews across time zones, braved faulty technology, and even recommended and introduced me to other contacts. I am especially grateful to Feizal Samath, Jennifer Turner, and Nisha Varia for their help in this regard. I would also like to thank Troy Anderson, David Feingold, and Bonita and Roy Thompson who took interest in this project and recommended potential interviewees. Finally, I must acknowledge my husband, Duncan, whose faith in me was a constant
