Induction of pluripotent stem cells from adult human fibroblasts by defined factors

by Kazutoshi Takahashi, Koji Tanabe, Mari Ohnuki, Megumi Narita, Tomoko Ichisaka, Kiichiro Tomoda - Cell 2007
"... Successful reprogramming of differentiated human somatic cells into a pluripotent state would allow creation of patient- and disease-specific stem cells. We previously reported generation of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, capable of germline transmission, from mouse somatic cells by transduct ..."

by transduction of four defined transcription factors. Here, we demonstrate the generation of iPS cells from adult human dermal fibroblasts with the same four factors: Oct3/4, Sox2, Klf4, and c-Myc. Human iPS cells were similar to human embryonic stem (ES) cells in morphology, proliferation, surface antigens

Factoring wavelet transforms into lifting steps

by Ingrid Daubechies, Wim Sweldens - J. FOURIER ANAL. APPL , 1998
"... This paper is essentially tutorial in nature. We show how any discrete wavelet transform or two band subband filtering with finite filters can be decomposed into a finite sequence of simple filtering steps, which we call lifting steps but that are also known as ladder structures. This decompositio ..."

in the biorthogonal, i.e, non-unitary case. Like the lattice factorization, the decomposition presented here asymptotically reduces the computational complexity of the transform by a factor two. It has other applications, such as the possibility of defining a wavelet-like transform that maps integers to integers.

Varieties with Definable Factor Congruences

by Pedro Sánchez Terraf, Diego J. Vaggione - Trans. Amer. Math. Soc
"... Abstract. We study direct product representations of algebras in varieties. We collect several conditions expressing that these representations are definable in a first-orderlogic sense, among them the concept of Definable Factor Congruences (DFC). The main results are that DFC is a Mal’cev property ..."

Existentially Definable Factor Congruences

by Pedro Sánchez Terraf , 906
"... A variety V has definable factor congruences if and only if factor congruences can be defined by a first-order formula Φ having central elements as parameters. We prove that if Φ can be chosen to be existential, factor congruences in every algebra of V are compact. We study factor congruences in ord ..."

Detection and Tracking of Point Features

by Carlo Tomasi, Takeo Kanade - International Journal of Computer Vision , 1991
"... The factorization method described in this series of reports requires an algorithm to track the motion of features in an image stream. Given the small inter-frame displacement made possible by the factorization approach, the best tracking method turns out to be the one proposed by Lucas and Kanade i ..."

A database of human segmented natural images and its application to evaluating segmentation algorithms and measuring ecological statistics

by David Martin, Charless Fowlkes, Doron Tal, Jitendra Malik - in Proc. 8th Int’l Conf. Computer Vision , 2001
"... This paper presents a database containing ‘ground truth ’ segmentations produced by humans for images of a wide variety of natural scenes. We define an error measure which quantifies the consistency between segmentations of differing granularities and find that different human segmentations of the s ..."

Theory of the Firm: Managerial Behavior, Agency Costs and Ownership Structure

by Michael C. Jensen, William H. Meckling , 1976
"... This paper integrates elements from the theory of agency, the theory of property rights and the theory of finance to develop a theory of the ownership structure of the firm. We define the concept of agency costs, show its relationship to the ‘separation and control’ issue, investigate the nature of ..."
