Buchnera aphidicola BCc has lost its symbiotic role as the tryptophan supplier to the aphid Cinara cedri. We report the presence of a plasmid in this endosymbiont that contains the trpEG genes. The remaining genes for the pathway (trpDCBA) are located on the chromosome of the secondary endosymbiont “Can-didatus Serratia symbiotica. ” Thus, we propose that a symbiotic consortium is necessary to provide tryptophan. Aphids are plant sap-feeding insects that maintain endo-symbiotic associations with bacteria (2). Their primary en-dosymbiont, Buchnera aphidicola, plays a role in providing nutrients, such as essential amino acids and vitamins, which are deficient in the insect diet (4). In addition to B. aphidi-cola, some aphid populations harbor facultative intracellular bacteria (3, 12). These bacteria reside in multiple host tis-sues, such as the gut, glands, body fluids, and cells surround-ing the primary bacteriocytes, or in their own bacteriocytes (1). During the period 1928–1949, several engineers contributed to the establishment of a sampling principle. They did this virtually independently of each other in the context of communications theory and practice. Five names stand out as being the main players in this drama: H. Nyquist, who laid the foundations for the minimal sampling rate; V. A. Kotel′nikov, C. E. Shannon, and I. Someya, whose treatment of the sampling principle was mathematical; and H. Raabe, who derived the minimal sampling rate and built hardware to reconstruct signals from samples taken at that rate. Their work is described below. As Shannon recognized, the mathematical set-ting already existed. In fact, it was part of a tradition that can now be traced back to Cauchy, but its significance for application was simply not realized until Shannon’s time.
