Preliminary material for APTS Nonparametric Smoothing module

"... Density estimation and regression problems are two of the most important types of problem encountered by statisticians. Nonparametric approaches to these problems have gained enormous popularity in the last fifty years or so, as they make far weaker assumptions than parametric methods. In this modul ..."

discussionand critical comment. Referencesin publicationsto InternationalFinanceDiscussionPapers (otherthan an acknowledgmentthat the writer has had accessto unpublishedmaterial)shouldbe cleared This study provides evidence that 10-year-aheadinflation expectations adapt very slowly to changesin realizedinflation. This evidencederivesprimarilyfrom yieldson 10-yeargovernmentbonds in a sampleof OECD countries,includinginflation-indexedbondswhere they are available. The study examinesboth the cross-countryand time-seriesbehaviorof interest rates and inflation rates. For the United States, additionalevidence is provided from a survey of 10-yearinflation expectationsheld by marketparticipants. This studydoes not presenta theoreticalmodelof expectationsformation. However, long memoryof the type documentedin this studywouldbe impliedby a modelof multipleinflationary regimes in which agents base their probability distributions of future regimes on past inflationary experience. i Joseph E. Aims: This module will introduce students to the statistical concepts and tools involved in modelling data which are correlated in time and/or space. Learning outcomes: By the end of the module, students should have achieved: • a clear understanding of the meaning of temporal and spatial correlation; • a good working knowledge of standard models to describe both the systematic and the random parts of an appropriate model; • the ability to implement and interpret these models in standard applications; • an understanding of some of the key concepts which lie at the heart of current research in this area; • appreciation of at least one substantial case study. Prerequisites: Preparation for this module should establish familiarity with: • standard models and tools for time series data, at the level of a typical undergraduate course on time series; • standard models and tools for spatial data at its simplest level; • inferential methods, including classical and Bayesian likelihood-based methods, to at
