Constrained model predictive control: Stability and optimality

by D. Q. Mayne, J. B. Rawlings, C. V. Rao, P. O. M. Scokaert - AUTOMATICA , 2000
"... Model predictive control is a form of control in which the current control action is obtained by solving, at each sampling instant, a finite horizon open-loop optimal control problem, using the current state of the plant as the initial state; the optimization yields an optimal control sequence and t ..."

and the first control in this sequence is applied to the plant. An important advantage of this type of control is its ability to cope with hard constraints on controls and states. It has, therefore, been widely applied in petro-chemical and related industries where satisfaction of constraints is particularly

Abstract: This paper illustrates an alternative implementation to automatic protection and supervision task using the basic principles of model-based fault-detection and isolation associated to the rule-based FDI with subsequent appropriate corrective actions. Hybrid systems may be precisely described by sequential function charts (SFC). Operation supervision of hybrid systems may be carried out simultaneously on the basis of such SFC description. As discrete event and continuous processes operate simultaneously in close cooperation, a strategy to diagnose such hybrid system by means of a structured methodology under SFC description tool on the IEC-848 standard is developed. AI Planning in a Chemical Plant Domain

by Ruth S. Aylett, James Soutter, Gary Petley, Paul W. H. Chung, Andrew G. Rushton , 1998
"... This paper discusses the issues involved in applying a generic AI planner to the problem of generating plant operating procedures for chemical process plant. It considers the problem of providing the correct planning facilities, concentrating on dealing with flow of chemicals, and proposes the use a ..."

THE LAMB W AVE INSPECTION OF CHEMICAL PLANT PIPEWORK

by D. N. Alleyne, P. Cawley, A. M. Lank, P. J. Mudge
"... Corrosion in pipework is a major problem, particularly in the oil, gas, chemical and petro-chemical industries. Since a high proportion of industrial pipelines are insulated, this means that even external corrosion cannot readily be detected without the removal of the insulation, which in most cases ..."

The authors are working on a project whose ultimate aim is to develop a guided wave testing technique for the inspection of pipework in chemical plants, the original target being to detect any areas of corrosion
