Abstract:

We investigate the inherent timing properties of the timed token protocol which is necessary to guarantee synchronous message deadlines in a timed token ring network such as FDDI (Fibre Distributed Data Interface) where the timed token medium access control (MAC) protocol is employed. As a result, an exact upper bound, which is tighter than previously published, on the time possibly elapsed between any v (v is an integer no less than two) successive token arrivals at a particular node has been derived. Our new result on the timing properties reported in this report is very important in the sense that based on it, an optimal synchronous bandwidth allocation scheme can be developed. The result is also useful for further studies and analyses of various kinds of synchronous bandwidth allocation schemes. The report, in general, enhances the result derived by Chen et al[Che92a]. 1.
