Abstract:

We present a sketch-based system for creating and modifying 3D scenes on mobile devices (PDAs). The user models the scene by sketching a panoramic image. The process of 2D sketching is aided by underlying simplified 3D model of the scene. The 3D model provides additional information to the system, allowing 3D-like transformations of the scene objects and automatic shading. The user either creates the 3D model by sketching, or uses an existing one. This turns the PDA into a portable 3D notepad, useful especially for 3D scene designers. Compared to existing methods for panoramic sketching, our method is optimised for use on PDAs. Problems with low resolution of PDA screens, low data transfer rates and specific interaction methods are addressed. Limited camera movement enforced by the panorama becomes an advantage, as it helps the users to navigate easier in the scene. 1.
