Abstract: This paper argues that Java (augmented by version 1.1 of the Real-Time Specification) will become superior to Ada 95 as a real-time systems implementation technology -- once e#cient and full implementations of version 1.1 become available. This is because the RTSJ will have an integrated set of mechanisms for representing the characteristics of real-time activities and a framework from within which those activities can be scheduled.
