Abstract

This paper surveys the theoretical developments in the field of stochastic process alcessgM processalessgq where action occurrences may be subject to adelW that is determined by a random variabl# A huge cleg of resource-sharing systems --l#q lqMq#g##Ik computers, clmput server architectures, networks -- can accuratel be described usingsuch stochastic specification formalcati The main emphasis of this paper is the treatment of operational semantics, notions of equivalg##x and (sound and complxx# axiomatisations of these equivalkkg# for different types of Markovian process alcessgq where deleg are governed by exponential distributions. Starting from a simple actionlxB al ebra for describing time-homogeneous continuous-time Markov chains, we consider the integration of actions and random delom both as asingl entity(lit in known Markovian process alcessg lc TIPP, PEPA and EMPA) and as separate entities(lit in the timed process alcessg timed CSP and TCCS). Intotal we consider fourrelg## calg## and investigate their relgqEkq#g# to existing Markovian process algebras. We also briefly indicate how one can profit from the separation of time and actions when incorporating more general non-Markovian distributions.
