Abstract
struggled to come to terms with the new industrial relations of lean production. For the first time in more than a decade the company faced well planned action by employees and trade unions, in particular the Transport and General Workers’ Union (TGWU) at its two assembly plants at Ellesmere Port in the north west of England (the Astra plant) and Luton in the south (the Vectra plant). The carefully contrived public relations image extolling the virtues of lean production for employees was in trouble. Workers at the two sites which together employ almost 10,000 workers took action in support of their claim for a reduction in the working week and an across the board wage rise.
