Abstract

The trend of current developments in telecommunication networks is towards systems which will allow a number of widely disparate traffic streams to share common resources through statistical sharing. How efficiently this can be managed depends critically upon the statistical characteristics of the traffic. Our aim in this paper is to investigate the application of a simple and robust graphical descriptor of a given traffic stream, designed to emphasize those aspects of the data that are important for the statistical sharing of common resources.
