Abstract
World Wide Web home pages have provided new ways for people to present and establish their identity and to find out about others. This chapter discusses the presentation of self in personal home pages in terms of Goffman's ideas as well as more recent social constructionist and feminist perspectives and approaches. Studies of personal home pages, comparing men's and women's pages, are reported. This is followed by a study in which women academics gave accounts of their experiences of the problems and opportunities that arose for them in creating and managing a public presentation of self and the proactive ways they were exploiting the opportunities of the Web.
