Abstract
We present a protocol for a distributed Cache Only Memory Architecture (COMA) along with its representation in the process description language CCS. We then consider the correctness of the protocol by investigating a number of logical properties expressed as formulae in the modal ¯-calculus. By exploiting the Edinburgh Concurrency Workbench (CWB) we demonstrate the extent to which the COMA protocol behaves correctly. 1 Introduction Distributed shared variable memory systems [AB86, Ste90] are thought to offer a low cost route to high performance parallel computing systems. Such systems implement a version of shared variable parallelism which provides a commonly accepted concurrent programming model. Their basic architecture consists of a collection of processors each with its own local memory (cache), together with a communication bus along which the individual processors can exchange information.
