Abstract
Through the ages becoming a craftsman has been achieved by working as an apprentice to a master of the craft. We do not propose to use this method on our students, but we have conducted a study in a similar spirit. Key ideas were to encourage active participation in class and to increase the interaction between students and teachers, in order to guide the efforts closer than usually done in a programming course. In our study, we tried four mechanisms to achieve this. We are convinced and have anecdotal evidence that our mechanisms have led to an improved efficiency and higher quality of the results, i. e. better students who are more motivated and will remember what they have learnt for a longer time. It is also worth noting that the use of these mechanisms has not required any extra resources. 1.
