Abstract

As part of the emerging ubiquitous and wearable computing movement there is a desire to accurately position people. The benefits of being able to know the position of someone are many, among them being able to adapt the current computing environment to whoever is present. This problem has been addressed on various scales, from global positioning systems with satellite communication to local systems with infrared communication. There has, however, been less research in the matter of how the location data obtained using these technologies should be processed and transferred to the relevant receivers. This thesis describes one approach to the location data management problem. A system of software agents has been used to accommodate flexibility and security. Each user has a location agent which manages all location data of the user. This agent can share its data with other parts of the system through location services.
