Abstract
Evolution, revolution and migration are shaping the path for the development of future mobile multimedia communication systems. First a brief overview of the worldwide developments in the field of wireless broadband multimedia communications is given. Taking this into account, a multi-disciplinary approach is considered to be highly suited to bring the innovations needed for future systems, like fourth generation mobile communication systems. The multi-disciplinary project described in this paper has five lines of research: ranging from the user aspects of `expertise at distance' to the technical challenges of transmitting bit rates above 100 Mb/s. The five lines are not followed independently. On the contrary, the insights of each of the research topics contribute to making the other research more meaningful.
