Abstract
Calculations for scheduling projects using activity networks often rely on strong assumptions that are not always acceptable. One assumption is that the duration of each activity can always be estimated as a single non-negative value. This can sometimes be an unrealistic assumption. This is often the case in field like research and development where little or no previous experience of similar activities is available. When relaxing the assumption of fixed durations for the activities the traditional calculations for determining the criticality of activities and the completion of the project are not always applicable. Turning to probabilistic techniques and simulation is sometimes the only way to get such information. A simulation tool that can be used for project scheduling both during the planning and the control phase of the project life cycle is presented. An illustrative example is used to demonstrate the use of the tool. 1
