Abstract
This paper presents a framework in which existing hypermedia usability research can be applied to the World Wide Web (web) to assist individuals to find the information they need and to help web authors present their information more e#ectively. The paper first examines the relationship between the assumptions underlying usability research and the way in which the web is built, maintained and used in practice. It is concluded that the web cannot realistically be considered as a single hypermedia structure to which usability research can directly be applied. Nonetheless, it is argued that, if the web is to be a major information source for the future, it must be desirable to increase the e#ectiveness of its use wherever possible.
