Abstract
This paper explores the requirements for database techniques in the construction of knowledge-based systems. Three knowledge-based systems are reviewed: XCN/R1, ISIS and Callisto in order to ascertain database requirements. These requirements result in the introduction of the Organization level, an extension to the symbol and knowledge levels introduced by Newell. An implementation of these requirements is explored in the SRL knowledge representation and problem-solving system.
