Abstract:
It has been said that doing research is the most wonderful thing a man can do with clothes on. I agree. Although the sweat always flows in the middle of disturbing problems, all troubles disappear (for a moment) when the solution is found, or when a pint finds its owner. This Thesis has been done at TFT (Research Institute for Theoretical Physics, University of Helsinki, Finland) under the supervision of Doc. Tapio Ala-Nissila. Although there are several persons to whom I am indebted during the course of this work, for obvious reasons it is Tapio who I want to thank first. He certainly has made a real effort to convince me that the idea of "unbearable lightness of being a grad student " is not valid. I still think it is. Anyway, although he hasn't fully succeeded in molding me, in many other ways he has taught me a lot. For that reason, among others, working in his group has certainly been worthwhile. Kari Kankaala has been an important character in this work as well, not only due to his good attitude for life, but also because some pseudorandom number generators like him. Let them make him rich some day. Working with Tuomo Hjelt and Sami Majaniemi has also been valuable many times, mainly because of Sami's unusual and intriguing character. The comments of Dr. Frederick James, Prof. Kimmo Kaski, and Prof. Timo Makelainen have improved this Thesis quite a lot. In addition, I want to thank Kimmo for helping me to achieve my current "position " at TFT about one and a half years ago, where there is a fine atmosphere among the personnel which I haven't experienced before. Thank you all. During this work I visited the research groups of See Chen Ying at Brown University
