This paper provides an account for the processing complexity of center-embedded constructions (CECs) in Japanese and Dutch. We present a model of sentence processing based on abductive and deductive inference, and show that the model makes the correct predictions for a wide array of data from these two languages. The model extends to CECs in German, Korean, and Hindi. The structure of the paper is as follows. Section 1 introduces the problem posed by CECs for natural language; Section 2 outlines the main proposal: an algorithm, and a complexity metric; Section 3 illustrates the operation of the model by giving several derivations for the Japanese and Dutch facts; and Section 4 concludes the paper. 1
