Abstract:

The current Internet service model treats all requests equivalently, both while being processed by servers and while being transmitted over the network. Growing usage and diversity of applications on the Internet makes Quality of Service (QoS) an increasingly critical issue, especially in the e-commerce realm. This paper covers the motivation and considerations for adding QoS to the Internet, the definition of Internet QoS, traffic and service specifications, the Integrated Services and Differentiated Service architectures, router mechanisms necessary to support network QoS such as queue management and packet scheduling, along with control mechanisms such as policy management, bandwidth brokers and admission control. The manner in which various architectures and protocols such as multiprotocol label switching can interoperate to provide end-to-end QoS assurances is examined. An overview of the current state of the art in Web server QoS is covered since a complete end-to-end QoS solution cannot be achieved solely through the efforts of network QoS. 1
