Abstract:

A generalized communication cost model is presented. The -model incorporates parameters that reflect empirical performance studies of various communication operations. This unified framework allows quantitative comparison of different network architectures, as well as different communication algorithms executed on the same network architecture. Moreover, the model is general enough to accommodate both pointto-point and collective communication. This paper introduces the -model and its primary characterization method, the -plot. Application of the model is demonstrated through evaluation of point-to-point and collective operations on various platforms and system configurations. 1
