Abstract: We argue that relational database management systems have been targeted at commercially significant but computationally trivial application areas, and the technology has failed to mature in computational expressivity. It risks losing further markets (e.g. geographical information systems) to object-oriented databases, when it is fundamentally better placed to address such applications, having a sound theoretical basis with ample scope for generalisation, e.g. in deductive, recursive and...
