This software package is a Matlab implementation of infeasible pathfollowing algorithms for solving standard semidefinite programming (SDP) problems. Mehrotratype predictorcorrector variants are included. Analogous algorithms for the homogeneous formulation of the standard SDP problem are also implemented. Four types of search directions are available, namely, the AHO, HKM, NT, and GT directions. A few classes of SDP problems are included as well. Numerical results for these classes show that our algorithms are fairly efficient and robust on problems with dimensions of the order of a few hundreds.

This paper discusses computational experiments with linear optimization problems involving semidefinite, quadratic, and linear cone constraints (SQLPs). Many test problems of this type are solved using a new release of SDPT3, a Matlab implementation of infeasible primaldual pathfollowing algorithms. The software developed by the authors uses Mehrotratype predictorcorrector variants of interiorpoint methods and two types of search directions: the HKM and NT directions. A discussion of implementation details is provided and computational results on problems from the SDPLIB and DIMACS Challenge collections are reported.

Optimization problems in which the variable is not a vector but a symmetric matrix which is required to be positive semidefinite have been intensely studied in the last ten years. Part of the reason for the interest stems from the applicability of such problems to such diverse areas as designing the strongest column, checking the stability of a differential inclusion, and obtaining tight bounds for hard combinatorial optimization problems. Part also derives from great advances in our ability to solve such problems efficiently in theory and in practice (perhaps “or ” would be more appropriate: the most effective computational methods are not always provably efficient in theory, and vice versa). Here we describe this class of optimization problems, give a number of examples demonstrating its significance, outline its duality theory, and discuss algorithms for solving such problems.

In this paper we consider semidefinite programs (SDPs) whose data depend on some unknown but bounded perturbation parameters. We seek "robust" solutions to such programs, that is, solutions which minimize the (worstcase) objective while satisfying the constraints for every possible value of parameters within the given bounds. Assuming the data matrices are rational functions of the perturbation parameters, we show how to formulate sufficient conditions for a robust solution to exist as SDPs. When the perturbation is "full," our conditions are necessary and sufficient. In this case, we provide sufficient conditions which guarantee that the robust solution is unique and continuous (Hölderstable) with respect to the unperturbed problem's data. The approach can thus be used to regularize illconditioned SDPs. We illustrate our results with examples taken from linear programming, maximum norm minimization, polynomial interpolation, and integer programming.

The formulation of interior point algorithms for semidefinite programming has become an active research area, following the success of the methods for largescale linear programming. Many interior point methods for linear programming have now been extended to the more general semidefinite case, but the initialization problem remained unsolved. In this paper we show that the initialization strategy of embedding the problem in a selfdual skewsymmetric problem can also be extended to the semidefinite case. This way the initialization problem of semidefinite problems is solved. This method also provides solution for the initialization of quadratic programs and it is applicable to more general convex problems with conic formulation.

Abstract. During the last two decades, major developments in convex optimization were focusing on conic programming, primarily, on linear, conic quadratic and semidefinite optimization. Conic programming allows to reveal rich structure which usually is possessed by a convex program and to exploit this structure in order to process the program efficiently. In the paper, we overview the major components of the resulting theory (conic duality and primaldual interior point polynomial time algorithms), outline the extremely rich “expressive abilities ” of conic quadratic and semidefinite programming and discuss a number of instructive applications.

This paper considers the problem of minimizing a linear function over the intersection of an affine space with a closed convex cone. In the first half of the paper, we give a detailed study of duality properties of this problem and present examples to illustrate these properties. In particular, we introduce the notions of weak/strong feasibility or infeasibility for a general primaldual pair of conic convex programs, and then establish various relations between these notions and the duality properties of the problem. In the second half of the paper, we propose a selfdual embedding with the following properties: Any weakly centered sequence converging to a complementary pair either induces a sequence converging to a certificate of strong infeasibility, or induces a sequence of primaldual pairs for which the amount of constraint violation converges to zero, and the corresponding objective values are in the limit not worse than the optimal objective value(s).
