Abstract This paper identifies the need for developing new ways to study curiosity in the context of today's pervasive technologies and unprecedented information access. Curiosity is defined in this paper in a way which incorporates the concomitant constructs of interest and engagement. A theoretical model for curiosity, interest and engagement in new media technology-pervasive learning environments is advanced, taking into consideration personal, situational and contextual factors as influencing variables. While the path associated with curiosity, interest, and engagement during learning and research has remained essentially the same, how individuals tackle research and information-seeking tasks and factors which sustain such efforts have changed. Learning modalities for promoting this theoretical model are discussed leading to a series of recommendations for future research. This article offers a multi-lens perspective on curiosity and suggests a multi-method research agenda for validating such a perspective.

Purpose can be characterized as a central, self-organizing life aim. Central in that when present, purpose is a predominant theme of a person’s identity. Selforganizing in that it provides a framework for systematic behavior patterns in everyday life. As a life aim, a purpose generates continual goals and targets for efforts to be devoted. A purpose provides a bedrock foundation that allows a person to be more resilient to obstacles, stress, and strain. In this paper, we outline a theoretical model of purpose development. Besides outlining various essential ingredients to creating a purpose in life, we describe three broad pathways. The first process is proactive involving effort over time and only resulting in a purpose after gradual refinement and clarification. The second process is reactive involving a transformative life event where a purpose arises and adds clarity to the person's life. The third process is social learning- involving the formation of purpose through observation, imitation, and modeling. Our aim is to stimulate more research on this higher-level construct in the architecture of personality.

‘The Positive Arc of Systemic Strengths ’ explores the important question: when is it that the best in human systems comes out most naturally and easily—especially in collective action, planning and design initiatives encompassing regions and cities, extended enterprises, industries and UN-level world summits? By analysing the per-formance and impacts of six case studies of the ‘whole system in the room ’ Apprecia-tive Inquiry design summit, this article provides a bird’s eye view of the opportunities, challenges and exciting new vistas opening up in this, the collaborative age—a time when systemic action and macromanagement skill are the primary leverage points for game-changing innovation, scalable solutions and industry leadership. While management innovation is rare, this article proposes that the tools are at hand for us to stand up, step up and scale up as we build a world where businesses can excel, people can thrive and nature can flourish. a b s t r a c t Mindfulness training has proven to be an efficacious therapeutic tool for a variety of clinical and nonclinical health problems and a booster of well-being. In this paper we propose a multi-level metacognitive model of mindfulness. We postulate and discuss following hypothesis: (1) mindfulness is related to the highest level of metacognition; (2) mindfulness depends on dynamic cooperation of three main components of the metacognition (metacognitive knowledge, metacognitive experiences and metacognitive skills); (3) a mindful meta-level is always conscious while the other meta-cognitive processes can occur implicitly; (4) intentionally practiced mindfulness decreases dissociations between awareness and meta-awareness; (5) components of mindful meta-level develop and change during continuous practice. The current model is discussed in the light of empirical data and other theoretical approaches to mindfulness concept. We believe that presented model provides some helpful avenues for future research and theoretical investigations into mindfulness and the mechanisms of its actions.

The latest version of Alice in Wonderland is a strikingly creative film directed by Tim Burton. It builds from the 1951 Disney classic film, and though it is a continuation of the classic story in many respects, it is also a unique tale in its own right. Familiar characters from the animated classic appear—Absolem the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and the mad tea party companions. But Alice is now a 19-year-old, and she must decide whether she wants to accept the marriage proposal of Hamish, the son of a lord. As she wanders away from the engagement party to reflect on the proposal, her curiosity leads her down the rabbit hole into Wonderland (referred to in this film as Underland). While there have been numerous remakes of the film from a number of countries and countless films that have modeled plotlines and themes from the original, such as the recent Pan’s Labyrinth (2006) and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), Burton’s version is superior in creativity and depth, as well as most resonant with the themes of positive psychology. Interest in positive psychology has exploded over the last 12 years, attracting neophyte and veteran researchers and practitioners to study what is best and strongest about people. Burton’s film provides an arena in which to discuss the research, practice, and emerging science-based interventions from the field of positive psychology that a practitioner might adapt in the clinical setting. The connection between positive psychology, character strengths research and practice, and contemporary cinema has been discussed at length elsewhere (Niemiec & Wedding, 2008), as has the use of films in the psychotherapy process (Berg-Cross, Jennings, & Baruch, 1990; Wedding & Niemiec, 2003). These connections are clearly evident in Alice in Wonderland, and Burton’s film illustrates a number of positive interventions that have empirical support. These interventions are based on the VIA classification of 24 strengths and six virtues (Peterson & Seligman, 2004) that have been found to be universal across cultures and nations (Park, Peterson, & Seligman, 2006). Character strengths such as zest,

Curiosity, interest, and intrinsic motivation are critical to the development of competence, knowledge, and expertise. Without a mechanism of intrinsic motivation, people would rarely explore new things, learn for its own sake, or engage with uncertain tasks despite feelings of confusion and anxiety. This article explores two sides of interest: momentary feelings (the emotion of interest) and enduring traits (the character strength of curiosity). Recent theories in emotion psychology can explain why and when people experience feelings of interest; recent research has illuminated the role of curiosity in cultivating knowledge, meaning in life, close relationships, and physical and mental resilience. The problem for future research – and for social and personality psychology more generally – is how to bridge the dynamics of everyday experience with stable, lifespan aspects of personality.

Individual diversity management was framed as how individual managers engage with and experience diversity situations. Salutogenesis was chosen as the psychological model to understand individual s ’ management of diversity. The aim of the research was to investigate whether and how sense of coherence (SOC) acts as differentiator between ineffective and effec-tive diversity management amongst managers. Based on their quantitatively measured SOC scores, 33 managers in a fi nancial services organization were divided into a (statistically signifi cantly different) low and high functioning subgroup. This was followed by a qualitative interview based on their experienced comprehension, manageability and meaningfulness of diversity experiences. Compared to the low subgroup, the high SOC subgroup reported understanding of the necessity of diversity discussions, managing themselves as representatives of a specifi c race, gender and age group, and fi nding diver-sity experiences meaningful towards identity forming and effective interpersonal relationships. Their SOC was linked to other salutogenic constructs. It was recommended that this organization design its diversity programme based on salu-togenesis as theoretical model.
