Analogy and similarity are often assumed to be distinct psychological processes. In contrast to this position, the authors suggest that both similarity and analogy involve a process of structural alignment and mapping, that is, that similarity is like analogy. In this article, the authors first describe the structure-mapping process as it has been worked out for analogy. Then, this view is extended to similarity, where it is used to generate new predictions. Finally, the authors explore broader implications of structural alignment for psychological processing.

Conceptual integration--"blending"-is a general cognitive operation on a par with analogy, recursion, mental modeling, conceptual categorization, and framing. It serves a variety of cognitive purposes. It is dynamic, supple, and active in the moment of thinking. It yields products that frequently become entrenched in conceptual structure and grammar, and it often performs new work on its previously entrenched products as inputs. Blending is easy to detect in spectacular cases but it is for the most part a routine, workaday process that escapes detection except on technical analysis. It is not resewed for special purposes, and is not costly. In blending, structure from input mental spaces is projected to a separate, "blended " mental space. The proiection is selective. Through completion and elaboration, the blend develops structure not provided by the inputs. Inferences, arguments, and ideas developed in the blend can have effect in cognition, leading us to modify the initial inputs and to change our view of the corresponding situations. Blending operates according to a set of uniform structural and dynamic principles. It additionally observes a set of optimality principles. I. This paper presents a learning theory pertinent to dynamic decision making (DDM) called instancebased learning theory (IBLT). IBLT proposes five learning mechanisms in the context of a decision-making process: instance-based knowledge, recognition-based retrieval, adaptive strategies, necessity-based choice, and feedback updates. IBLT suggests in DDM people learn with the accumulation and refinement of instances, containing the decision-making situation, action, and utility of decisions. As decision makers interact with a dynamic task, they recognize a situation according to its similarity to past instances, adapt their judgment strategies from heuristic-based to instance-based, and refine the accumulated knowledge according to feedback on the result of their actions. The IBLT’s learning mechanisms have been implemented in an ACT-R cognitive model. Through a series of experiments, this paper shows how the IBLT’s learning mechanisms closely approximate the relative trend magnitude and performance of human data. Although the cognitive model is bounded within the context of a dynamic task, the IBLT is a general theory of decision making applicable to other dynamic environments.

CATO is an intelligent learning environment designed to help beginning law students learn basic skills of making arguments with cases. Using CATO, students practice tasks of induction and analogical argumentation. They practice testing theories against a body of cases and making written arguments about a problem, comparing and contrasting it to past cases. CATO’s model addresses arguments in which two opponents analogize a problem to favorable cases, distinguish unfavorable cases, assess the significance of similarities and differences between cases in light of normative knowledge about the domain, and use that knowledge to organize multi-case arguments. CATO communicates the model to students by presenting dynamically-generated argumentation examples and by reifying argument structure based on the model. CATO also provides a case database and tools based on the model that help make students ’ tasks more manageable. CATO was evaluated in the context of an actual legal writing course, in a study involving 30 first-year law students. A central question in metaphor research is how metaphors establish mappings between concepts from different domains. The authors propose an evolutionary path based on structure-mapping theory. This hypothesis-the career of metaphor-postulates a shift in mode of mapping from comparison to categorization as metaphors are conventionalized. Moreover, as demonstrated by 3 experiments, this processing shift is reflected in the very language that people use to make figurative assertions. The career of metaphor hypothesis offers a unified theoretical framework that can resolve the debate between comparison and categorization models of metaphor. This account further suggests that whether metaphors are processed directly or indirectly, and whether they operate at the level of individual concepts or entire conceptual domains, will depend both on their degree of conventionality and on their linguistic form. Over the past two decades, the cognitive perspective on metaphor has undergone a radical shift. Traditionally, metaphors have been treated as both rare in comparison to literal language and largely ornamental in nature. Current research suggests precisely the opposite. Distributed representations are attractive for a number of reasons. They offer the possibility of representing concepts in a continuous space, they degrade gracefully with noise, and they can be processed in a parallel network of simple processing elements. However, the problem of representing nested structure in distributed representations has been for some time a prominent concern of both proponents and critics of connectionism [Fodor and Pylyshyn 1988; Smolensky 1990; Hinton 1990]. The lack of connectionist representations for complex structure has held back progress in tackling higher-level cognitive tasks such as language understanding and reasoning. In this thesis I review connectionist representations and propose a method for the distributed representation of nested structure, which I call "Holographic Reduced Representations " (HRRs).
