Studying natural language, and especially how people describe the world around them can help us better understand the visual world. In turn, it can also help us in the quest to generate natural language that describes this world in a human manner. We present a simple yet effective approach to automatically compose image descriptions given computer vision based inputs and using web-scale n-grams. Unlike most previous work that summarizes or retrieves pre-existing text relevant to an image, our method composes sentences entirely from scratch. Experimental results indicate that it is viable to generate simple textual descriptions that are pertinent to the specific content of an image, while permitting creativity in the description – making for more human-like annotations than previous approaches. 1

The potential benefit from this source is made more significant due to the enormous amount of language data easily available today. We present a system to automatically generate natural language descriptions from images that exploits both statistics gleaned from parsing large quantities of text data and recognition algorithms from computer vision. The system is very effective at producing relevant sentences for images. It also generates descriptions that are notably more true to the specific image content than previous work. 1.

Abstract. Most approaches to the visual perception of humans do not include high-level activity recognitition. This paper presents a system that fuses and interprets the outputs of several computer vision components as well as speech recognition to obtain a high-level understanding of the perceived scene. Our laboratory for investigating new ways of human-machine interaction and teamwork support, is equipped with an assemblage of cameras, some close-talking microphones, and a videowall as main interaction device. Here, we develop state of the art real-time computer vision systems to track and identify users, and estimate their visual focus of attention and gesture activity. We also monitor the users’ speech activity in real time. This paper explains our approach to highlevel activity recognition based on these perceptual components and a temporal logic engine.

We develop and demonstrate automatic image description methods using a large captioned photo collection. One contribution is our technique for the automatic collection of this new dataset – performing a huge number of Flickr queries and then filtering the noisy results down to 1 million images with associated visually relevant captions. Such a collection allows us to approach the extremely challenging problem of description generation using relatively simple non-parametric methods and produces surprisingly effective results. We also develop methods incorporating many state of the art, but fairly noisy, estimates of image content to produce even more pleasing results. Finally we introduce a new objective performance measure for image captioning. 1

Abstract The goal of high-level event recognition is to automatically detect complex high-level events in a given video sequence. This is a difficult task especially when videos are captured under unconstrained conditions by nonprofessionals. Such videos depicting complex events have limited quality control, and therefore, may include severe camera motion, poor lighting, heavy background clutter, and occlusion. However, due to the fast growing popularity of such videos, especially on the Web, solutions to this problem are in high demands and have attracted great interest from researchers. In this paper, we review current technologies for complex event recognition in unconstrained videos. While the existing solutions vary, we identify common key modules and provide detailed descriptions along with some insights for each of them, including extraction and representation of low-level features across different modalities, classification strategies, fusion techniques, etc. Publicly available benchmark datasets, performance metrics, and related research forums are also described.
