Searching scanned handwritten documents is a relatively unexplored frontier for documents in any language. In the general search literature retrieval methods are described as being either image-based or text-based with the corresponding algorithms being quite different. Versatile search is defined as a framework where the query can be either a textual string or an image snippet in any language and the retrieval method is a fusion of text- and imageretrieval methods. An end-to-end versatile system known as CEDARABIC is described for searching a repository of scanned handwritten Arabic documents; in addition to being a search engine it includes several tools for image processing such as line removal, line segmentation, creating ground-truth, etc. In the search process of CEDARABIC the query can be either in English or Arabic. A UNICODE and an image query are maintained throughout the search, with the results being combined by an artificial neural network. The combination results are better than each approach alone. The results can be further improved by refining the component pieces of the framework (text transcription and image search). 1

Search and retrieval is gaining importance in the ink domain due to the increase in the availability of online handwritten data. However, the problem is challenging due to variations in handwriting between various writers, digitizers and writing conditions. In this paper, we propose a retrieval mechanism for online handwriting, which can handle different writing styles, specifically for Indian languages. The proposed approach provides a keyboard-based search interface that enables to search handwritten data from any platform, in addition to pen-based and example-based queries. One of the major advantages of this framework is that information retrieval techniques such as ranking relevance, detecting stopwords and controlling word forms are extended to work with search and retrieval in the ink domain. The framework also allows cross-lingual document retrieval across Indian languages.

Abstract--Resolution of different types of loops in handwritten script presents a difficult task, and is an important step in many classic word recognition systems, writer modeling, and signature verification. When processing handwritten script, a great deal of ambiguity occurs when strokes overlap, merge or intersect. This paper presents a novel loop modeling and contour-based handwriting analysis that improves loop investigation. We show excellent results on various loop resolution scenarios including axial loop understanding and collapsed loop recovery. We demonstrate our approach for loop investigation on several realistic data-sets of static binary images and compare with the ground truth of the genuine online signal.

Computer Assisted Visual Interactive Recognition, or CAVIAR, has proven to be an effective methodology for integrating human and machine expertise in addressing challenging pattern recognition tasks. In this paper, we examine the application of the CAVIAR paradigm to problems arising in real-time document analysis in the field. We identify hurdles we expect to encounter, propose potential solutions, and describe an evaluation framework to help determine whether this is a fruitful line of research. 1

Advances in Writer identification and verification ∗ The behavioral-biometrics methods of writer identification and verification are currently enjoying renewed interest, with very promising results. This paper presents a general background and basis for handwriting biometrics. A range of current methods and applications is given. Results on a number of methods are summarized and a more in-depth example of two combined approaches is presented. By combining textural, allographic and placement features, modern systems are starting to display useful performance levels. However, user acceptance will be largely determined by explainability of system results and the integration of system decisions within a (Bayesian) framework of reasoning that is currently becoming forensic practice. 1

Handwriting Analysis or Graphology is a scientific method of identifying, evaluating and understanding personality through the strokes and patterns revealed by handwriting. Handwriting reveals the true personality including emotional outlay, fears, honesty, defenses and many others. Professional handwriting examiners called graphologist often identify the writer with a piece of handwriting. Accuracy of handwriting analysis depends on how skilled the analyst is. Although human intervention in handwriting analysis has been effective, it is costly and prone to fatigue. Hence the proposed methodology focuses on developing a tool for behavioral analysis which can predict the personality traits automatically with the aid of a computer without the human intervention. In this paper a method has been proposed to predict the personality of a person from the baseline, the pen pressure and the letter„t ‟ as found in an individual‘s handwriting. These parameters are the inputs to the Artificial Neural Network which outputs the personality trait of the writer. The performance is measured by examining multiple samples.

Abstract—This paper proposes the use of content base image retrieval (CBIR) techniques for indexing and retrieval of handwritten documents in Thai language. Issues associated with Thai handwritten documents are the lack of spacing between words, multi-level alphabets and different writing styles. This causes low recognition rate based on automated techniques such as Optical Character Recognition (OCR). This paper also examined off-line signature recognition techniques in order to adapt to Thai handwriting system for matching data. The objective of the proposal is to develop a semi-automated method to index and retrieve Thai handwritten documents based on sampled keywords by combining CBIR and signature recognition techniques. Keywords-Thai handwritten document; CBIR; sampled
