This paper presents the architecture and learning procedure underlying ANFIS (AdaptiveNetwork -based Fuzzy Inference System), a fuzzy inference system implemented in the framework of adaptive networks. By using a hybrid learning procedure, the proposed ANFIS can construct an input-output mapping based on both human knowledge (in the form of fuzzy if-then rules) and stipulated input-output data pairs. In our simulation, we employ the ANFIS architecture to model nonlinear functions, identify nonlinear components on-linely in a control system, and predict a chaotic time series, all yielding remarkable results. Comparisons with artificail neural networks and earlier work on fuzzy modeling are listed and discussed. Dynamic textures are sequences of images of moving scenes that exhibit certain stationarity properties in time; these include sea-waves, smoke, foliage, whirlwind etc. We present a novel characterization of dynamic textures that poses the problems of modeling, learning, recognizing and synthesizing dynamic textures on a firm analytical footing. We borrow tools from system identification to capture the "essence" of dynamic textures; we do so by learning (i.e. identifying) models that are optimal in the sense of maximum likelihood or minimum prediction error variance. For the special case of second-order stationary processes, we identify the model sub-optimally in closed-form. Once learned, a model has predictive power and can be used for extrapolating synthetic sequences to infinite length with negligible computational cost. We present experimental evidence that, within our framework, even low-dimensional models can capture very complex visual phenomena.

Dynamic probabilistic networks are a compact representation of complex stochastic processes. In this paper we examine how to learn the structure of a DPN from data. We extend structure scoring rules for standard probabilistic networks to the dynamic case, and show how to search for structure when some of the variables are hidden. Finally, we examine two applications where such a technology might be useful: predicting and classifying dynamic behaviors, and learning causal orderings in biological processes. We provide empirical results that demonstrate the applicability of our methods in both domains. 1

In this paper, we describe a novel technique, called motion texture, for synthesizing complex human-figure motion (e.g., dancing) that is statistically similar to the original motion captured data. We de- fine motion texture as a set of motion textons and their distribution, which characterize the stochastic and dynamic nature of the captured motion. Specifically, a motion texton is modeled by a linear dynamic system (LDS) while the texton distribution is represented by a transition matrix indicating how likely each texton is switched to another. We have designed a maximum likelihood algorithm to learn the motion textons and their relationship from the captured dance motion. The learnt motion texture can then be used to generate new animations automatically and/or edit animation sequences interactively. Most interestingly, motion texture can be manipulated at different levels, either by changing the fine details of a specific motion at the texton level or by designing a new choreography at the distribution level. Our approach is demonstrated by many synthesized sequences of visually compelling dance motion.

This paper provides an overview of commercially available model predictive control (MPC) technology, both linear and nonlinear, based primarily on data provided by MPC vendors. A brief history of industrial MPC technology is presented first, followed by results of our vendor survey of MPC control and identification technology. A general MPC control algorithm is presented, and approaches taken by each vendor for the different aspects of the calculation are described. Identification technology is reviewed to determine similarities and differences between the various approaches. MPC applications performed by each vendor are summarized by application area. The final section presents a vision of the next generation of MPC technology, with an emphasis on potential business and research opportunities.

The goal of control engineering is to improve, or in some cases ena- ble, the performance of a system by the addition of sensors, which measure various signals in the system and external command signals, control processors, which process the measu red signals to drive actuators, which affect the behav- ior of the system. A nonlinear black box structure for a dynamical system is a model structure that is prepared to describe virtually any nonlinear dynamics. There has been considerable recent interest in this area with structures based on neural networks, radial basis networks, wavelet networks, hinging hyperplanes, as well as wavelet transform based methods and models based on fuzzy sets and fuzzy rules. This paper describes all these approaches in a common framework, from a user's perspective. It focuses on what are the common features in the different approaches, the choices that have to be made and what considerations are relevant for a successful system identification application of these techniques. It is pointed out that the nonlinear structures can be seen as a concatenation of a mapping from observed data to a regression vector and a nonlinear mapping from the regressor space to the output space. Temporal textures are textures with motion. Examples include wavy water, rising steam and fire. We model image sequences of temporal textures using the spatio-temporal autoregressive model (STAR). This model expresses each pixel as a linear combination of surrounding pixels lagged both in space and in time. The model provides a base for both recognition and synthesis. We show how the least squares method can accurately estimate model parameters for large, causal neighborhoods with more than 1000 parameters. Synthesis results show that the model can adequately capture the spatial and temporal characteristics of many temporal textures. A 95% recognition rate is achieved for a 135 element database with 15 texture classes. 1.
