We present procedures to compile any propositional clausal database \Sigma into a logically equivalent "compiled" database \Sigma ? such that, for any clause C, \Sigma j= C if and only if there is a unit refutation of \Sigma ? [ :C. It follows that once the compilation process is complete any query about the logical consequences of \Sigma can be correctly answered in time linear in the sum of the sizes of \Sigma ? and the query. The compiled database \Sigma ? is for all but one of the procedures a subset of the set P I (\Sigma) of prime implicates of \Sigma, but \Sigma ? can be exponentially smaller than P I (\Sigma). Of independent interest, we prove the equivalence of unit-refutability with two restrictions of resolution, and provide a new sufficient condition for unit refutation completeness, thus identifying a new class of tractable theories, one which is of interest to abduction problems as well. Probabilistic Horn abduction is a simple framework to combine probabilistic and logical reasoning into a coherent practical framework. The numbers can be consistently interpreted probabilistically, and all of the rules can be interpreted logically. The relationship between probabilistic Horn abduction and logic programming is at two levels. At the first level probabilistic Horn abduction is an extension of pure Prolog, that is useful for diagnosis and other evidential reasoning tasks. At another level, current logic programming implementation techniques can be used to efficiently implement probabilistic Horn abduction. This forms the basis of an "anytime" algorithm for estimating arbitrary conditional probabilities. The focus of this paper is on the implementation. In this paper we investigate the simple logical properties of contexts. We describe both the syntax and semantics of a general propositional language of context, and we give a Hilbert style proof system for this language. A propositional logic of context extends classical propositional logic in two ways. Firstly, a new modality, ist(; OE), is introduced. It is used to express that the sentence, OE, holds in the context, . Secondly, each context has its own vocabulary, i.e. a set of propositional atoms which are defined or meaningful in that context. The main results of this paper are the soundness and completeness of this Hilbert style proof system. We also provide soundness and completeness results (i.e., correspondence theory) for various extensions of the general system. Any learning process can be viewed as a self-modification of the leaxnefs current knowledge tArough an. interaction with some information source. Such knowledge modification is guided by the learner's deshe to achieve a certain outcome, and can engage any kind of inference. The type of inference involved depends on he input information, the current (background) knowledge and the learneFs task ax hand. Based on such a view of learning, several fundamental concepts are analized and clarified, in paxticular, analytic and synthetic learning, derivm:ional and hypothetical explanation, constnictive induction, abduction, abstraction and deductive generalization. It is shown that inductive generalization and abduction can be viewed as two basic forms of general induction, and that abstraction and deductive generalization axe two related forms of constructive deduction. Using this conceptual framework, a methodology for multistrategy task-adaptive learning (MTL) is outlined, in which learning strategies axe combined dynamically, depending on the current learning situation. Speccally, an MTL learner anaLizes a "wiad" relationship among the input information, the background knowledge and the learning task, and on that basis determines which strategy, or. a combination thereof, is most appropriate at a given learning step. To implement the MTL methodology, a new knowledge representation is proposed, based on the parametric association rules (PARs). Basic ideas of MTL are illustrated by means of the well-known "cup" example, through which is shown how an MTL learner can employ, depending the above mad relationship, emprical learning, constructive inductive generalization, abduction, explanation-based learning and absuaction.

Probabilistic databases are formalized by means of logic theories based on a probabilistic first-order language proposed by Halpern. A sound a complete method is described for evaluating queries in probabilistic theories. The focus of this paper is nonmonotonic reasoning as it relates to logic programming. I discuss the pre-history of nonmonotonic reasoning starting from approximately 1958. I then review the research that has been accomplished in the areas of circumscription, default theory, modal theories and logic programming. The overview includes the major results developed including complexity results that are known about the various theories. Characteristic models are an alternative, model based, representation for Horn expressions. It has been shown that these two representations are incomparable and each has its advantages over the other. It is therefore natural to ask what is the cost of translating, back and forth, between these representations. Interestingly, the same translation questions arise in database theory, where it has applications to the design of relational databases. We study the complexity of these problems and prove some positive and negative results. Our main result is that the two translation problems are equivalent under polynomial reductions, and that they are equivalent to the corresponding decision problem. Namely, translating is equivalent to deciding whether a given set a models is the set of characteristic models for a given Horn expression.
