We develop a calculable analytic approach to marginal deformations in open string field theory using wedge states with operator insertions. For marginal operators with regular operator products, we construct analytic solutions to all orders in the deformation parameter. In particular, we construct an exact timedependent solution that describes Dbrane decay and incorporates all α' corrections. For marginal operators with singular operator products, we construct solutions by regularizing the singularity and adding counterterms. We explicitly carry out the procedure to third order in the deformation parameter.

In this paper we give an exact analytic solution for tachyon condensation in the modified (picture 0) cubic superstring field theory. We prove the absence of cohomology and, crucially, reproduce the correct value for the Dbrane tension. The solution is surprising for two reasons: First, the existence of a tachyon vacuum in this theory has not been definitively established in the level expansion. Second, the solution vanishes in the GSO(−) sector, implying a “tachyon

We construct analytic solutions of open bosonic string field theory for any exactly marginal deformation in any boundary conformal field theory when properly renormalized operator products of the marginal operator are given. We explicitly provide such renormalized operator products for a class of marginal deformations which include the deformations of flat Dbranes in flat backgrounds by constant massless modes of the gauge field and of the scalar fields on the Dbranes, the cosine potential for a spacelike coordinate, and the hyperbolic cosine potential for the timelike coordinate. In our construction we use integrated vertex operators, which are closely related to finite deformations in boundary conformal field theory, while previous analytic solutions were based on unintegrated vertex operators. We compute a class of gauge invariant observables for marginal solutions and the tachyon vacuum. In each case we find that the observables are related in a simple way to the closedstring tadpole on a disk with appropriate boundary conditions. We give a sketch of an argument that this result should hold in general using the BRST invariance of the closed string twopoint function. Finally, we discuss the analogous set of invariants in the Berkovits superstring field theory.

We construct analytic solutions of open superstring field theory for any exactly marginal deformation in any boundary superconformal field theory when properly renormalized operator products of the marginal operator are given. Our construction is an extension of the general framework for marginal deformations developed in arXiv:0707.4472 for open bosonic string field theory, and the solutions are based on integrated vertex operators which are closely related to finite deformations in boundary superconformal field theory.

In this work we review Schnabl’s construction of the tachyon vacuum solution to bosonic covariant open string field theory and the results that followed. We survey the state of the art of string field theory research preceding this construction focusing on Sen’s conjectures and the results obtained using level truncation methods. The tachyon vacuum solution is described in various ways, in particular we describe its geometric representation using wedge states and its formal algebraic representation as a gauge solution. We also derive the form of the solution’s building blocks in the oscillator representation. We show that some of Sen’s conjectures can be proven analytically using this solution. The tools used in the context of the vacuum solution can be adapted to the construction of other solutions, namely various marginal deformations. We present some of the approaches used in the construction of these solutions. The generalization to open superstring field theory is derived in details. We start from the exposition of the problems one faces in the construction of superstring field

Abstract: We describe a method for obtaining analytic solutions corresponding to exact marginal deformations in open bosonic string field theory. For the photon marginal deformation we have an explicit analytic solution to all orders. Our construction is based on a pure gauge solution where the gauge field is not in the Hilbert space. We show that the solution itself is nevertheless perfectly regular. We study its gauge transformations and calculate some coefficients explicitly. Finally, we discuss how our method can be implemented for other marginal deformations.

We argue that the rollingtachyon solution in cubic OSFT proceeds at late times to precisely the analytic tachyonvacuum solution constructed by Schnabl. In addition, we demonstrate the relationship between the rollingtachyon solution and the standard BCFT description by showing that there is a finite gauge transformation which relates the two.
