A critical challenge to creating effective agent-based systems is allowing them to operate effectively when the operating environment is complex, dynamic, and error-prone. In this paper we will review the limitations of current "agent-local" approaches to exception handling in agent systems, and propose an alternative approach based on a shared exception handling service that is "plugged", with little or no customization, into existing agent systems. This service can be viewed as a kind of "coordination doctor; it knows about the different ways multi-agent systems can get "sick", actively looks system-wide for symptoms of such illnesses, and prescribes specific interventions instantiated for this particular context from a body of general treatment procedures. Agents need only implement their normative behavior plus a minimal set of interfaces. We claim that this approach offers simplified agent development as well as more effective and easier to modify exception handling behavior.

Abstract. A critical challenge to creating effective open multi-agent systems is allowing them to operate effectively in the face of potential failures. In this paper we present an experimental evaluation of a set of domain-independent services designed to handle the failure modes ("exceptions") that can occur in such environments, applied to the well-known "Contract Net " multi-agent system coordination protocol. We show that these services can produce substantially more effective fault handling behavior than standard existing techniques, while allowing simpler agent implementations.

The design of complex artifacts has increasingly become a cooperative process, with the detection and resolution of conflicts between design agents playing a central role. Effective tools for supporting the conflict management process, however, are still lacking. This paper describes a system called DCSS (the Design Collaboration Support System) developed to meet this challenge in design teams with both human and machine-based agents. Every design agent is provided with an "assistant" that provides domain-independent conflict detection, classification and resolution expertise. The design agents provide the domainspecific expertise needed to instantiate this general expertise, including the rationale for their actions, as a part of their design activities. DCSS has been used successfully to support the cooperative design of Local Area Networks by human and machine-based designers. This text adopts a cognitive viewpoint on design, focusing on individually conducted activities actually implemented in professional, industrial design projects. It presents elements for a cognitive descriptive model of design that, on the one hand, furthers our understanding of design, and on the other hand, offers elements to people who wish to use such knowledge in order to advance education and practice of professional designers. The text is especially concerned with dynamic aspects of design —that is, it focuses on the activity implemented by designers, especially the cognitive processes and/or strategies they use — rather than with static aspects. Section 1 presents the classical cognitive viewpoint on design, that is, the symbolic information-processing (SIP) approach, represented by Herbert A. Simon. Section 2 focuses on the main alternative to the SIP approach for design, i.e. the "situativity " (SIT) approach, mainly represented by Donald Schön. Section 3 is the main division of this text. It presents nuances and critiques with respect to both SIP and SIT approaches, and completes and integrates these two approaches into our own cognitively oriented dynamic approach to design.

Product development has increasingly become a cooperative endeavor that requires effective coordination in the face of highly complex inter-dependencies exposed by distribution over participants, time and perspectives. Distinct coordination support technologies have emerged for each of these kinds of distribution, but all face important limitations. This paper presents an integrated model of concurrent engineering coordination that synergistically combines existing coordination approaches in a way that avoids many of their individual limitations and combines their strengths. An initial implementation of this model is presented and challenges for future evolution of this technology are identified. Managing inconsistency in specifications covers a range of activities from consistency checking and inconsistency analysis to inconsistency handling through action. In this paper we argue that inconsistency analysis is insufficient to determine the choice of actions to take in the presence of inconsistency. Rather, we propose that some form of `hypothetical reasoning' is needed in order to determine the consequences of different actions and thereby facilitate the decision-making process. We suggest some logic-based techniques and associated heuristics for analysing the consequences of acting in the presence of inconsistency. 1. In this paper, a formal structure is proposed to represent conflicts based on the axiomatic theory of design modeling and the Recursive Object Model (ROM). The proposed formal structure is derived by analyzing the definitions of conflicts using the ROM. The foundation of this formal structure is the atomic conflict, which is composed of three elements: two competing objects and one resource object for which the former two contend. The relations between those three elements in a conflict are also analyzed. Examples show that the representation proposed in this paper can reflect the structure of most conflicts.

This chapter seeks to give the reader an idea of how to import conflict conceptions from sociology into distributed AI (DAI). In a preliminary comparison of conflict research in DAI and sociology, we show that both disciplines talk about essentially the same issues when they refer to conflict, although there are important differences in their motivations and reasons for studying conflict. The main sections deal with conflict from the perspectives of two mainstreams of sociological thought: the theory of autopoietic social systems and the pragmatist theories of symbolic interaction. Following our attempt to derive useful conceptual insights from the two theoretical approaches and to identify potentialities for future interdisciplinary research, six interrelated themes are described which seem to be of particular promise for both DAI and sociology alike.
