Abstract. In this paper we describe components for integrated microliquid handling systems such as fluid injection analysis, and first results of planar integration of components. The components discussed are channels, passive and active valves, actuators for micropumps, micromixers, microflow sensors, optical detectors, pumps and dosage systems. The dosage system described comprises a flow sensor and a pump micromachined on a single silicon wafer sandwiched between Pyrex wafers. The liquid pump is of the reciprocating type with a thermo-pneumatic actuator. The microliquid flow sensor is based on the thermal anemometer type. Both pump and flow sensor are realized in a 3 inch (100)- Si wafer using a KOH bulk etch from both sides of the wafer. The dosing system allows accurate dosing of liquid in the wl regime and can easily be integrated with components as mixers and detectors to microliquid handling systems. A new concept for micromixing of liquids is introduced and its feasibility is demonstrated. The mixer allows fast mixing of small amounts of two liquids and it is applicable to microliquid handling systems. The,mixer has a channel for the liquid, an inlet port for t h e reagent, and a mixing area, the bottom of which has 400 micronozzles (15 p m x i 5 Nm). Through these nozzles, a reagent is injected into the sample liquid, making many microplumes. These plumes speed up mixing by diffusion over a short distance. 1.

We calculate the gravitational radiation produced by the merger and coalescence of inspiraling binary neutron stars using 3-dimensional numerical simulations. The stars are modeled as polytropes and start out in the pointmass limit at wide separation. The hydrodynamic integration is performed using smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) with Newtonian gravity, and the gravitational radiation is calculated using the quadrupole approximation. We have run several simulations, varying both the neutron star radius and the equation of state. The resulting gravitational wave energy spectra dE/df are rich in information about the hydrodynamics of merger and coalescence. In particular, our results demonstrate that detailed information on both GM/Rc2 and the equation of state can in principle be extracted from the spectrum.

We present the first calculations of the gravitational radiation produced by nonaxisymmetric dynamical instability in a rapidly rotating compact star. The star deforms into a bar shape, shedding ∼ 4 % of its mass and ∼ 17% of its angular momentum. The gravitational radiation is calculated in the quadrupole approximation. For a mass M ∼ 1.4 M ⊙ and radius R ∼ 10 km, the gravitational waves have frequency ∼ 4 kHz and amplitude h ∼ 2 ×10−22 at the distance of the Virgo Cluster. They carry off energy ∆E/M ∼ 0.1% and radiate angular momentum ∆J/J ∼ 0.7%.

ABSTRACT The success of electronic procurement (e-procurement) in the private sector has been a driving force for governments to seek cost reductions and administration efficiencies by adopting this method on a wide scale. However, the enthusiastic reaction to e-procurement in richer developing countries, such as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has never been measured by critical evaluation, and this paper makes a first attempt in this respect. In doing so, it evaluates and investigates the case of the UAE e-government procurement in relation to organisational issues. This examination is then followed by an exploration of best practice in this field.

E-Procurement is more than just a system for making purchases online. Some companies implement e-procurement and succeed while others fail. This study was carried out on the adoption of e-procurement among large scale manufacturers in Nairobi, Kenya. The study had three objectives: To ascertain the extent to which large scale manufacturers in Nairobi have adopted e-procurement; to determine the critical success factors influencing the success of e-procurement in large manufacturing firms in Nairobi and to establish the challenges that face e-procurement adoption in large scale manufacturing firms in Nairobi. The research involved a cross-sectional survey of the large manufacturing companies operating in Kenya. The study adopted a descriptive approach in trying to establish the factors that influence the success of e-procurement projects. A sample size of 46 respondents was selected from a list of 455 large manufacturing companies. Data was collected from the respondents through a questionnaire. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS and presented in tables. The study revealed that majority of the large scale manufacturers in Nairobi, Kenya has adopted e-procurement with the following e-procurement practices: online advertisement of tenders, receiving online submission of proposals for the tenders, and short listing suppliers online among others. The five critical success factors identified were: employees and management commitment to success of adoption; reliability of information technology and supplier performance; monitoring the performance of e-procurement systems;
