ABSTRACT: We formulate and analyze a model of team structure and monitoring within a Linear-Exponential-Normal (LEN) agency framework. We incorporate three key in-struments in the internal design of an organization involving team production: team size, monitoring activities, and incentive contracts. We show that the complex trade-offs among these instruments lead to surprisingly simple implications. One such result is that the equilibrium level of pay-for-performance for workers is attenuated and is, at times, invariant to most environmental variables of interest. As such, our model helps explain the empirical puzzle of the lack of a trade-off for risk / incentives shown in standard agency models. Our work also demonstrates the presence of complemen-tarities between team size and monitoring, and between worker talent and managerial monitoring ability. Finally, we derive predictions about the impact of environmental var-iables on the choice of optimal team size, incentives, and employee quality, even in the presence of an external marketplace for talent.

This document examines whether early targeted academic intervention can improve college admission test scores and pre- college planning for students identified through the Duke Talent Search and the school system Challenge Program. Students selected for the Early Awareness Test Preparation Pilot Program were invited to participate during their eighth grade year and a 4-year commitment to the program was requested. Through the pilot program, students annually attended a series of classes in Math, English, and test taking skills. Preliminary results indicated that the program assisted a majority of students in gaining an opportunity to increase test scores. Both the lack of an exit summary and the size of the pilot qDrogram were drawbacks to the study. Approximately half of the students were unable to attend the last testing. It is hoped that upon completion of the 4-year pilot, results from the first year can be assessed in comparison to the total remaining student population. This could provide a clearer picture of what can be accomplished through the utilization of the program. (Contains 13 references.) ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the durability of an EPDM geomembrane installed 18 years ago in the water reservoir of El Boquerón (Canary Islands, Spain). To do so, samples were regularly taken from different places of the water reservoir. Samples were laboratory tested as follows: foldability at low temperature, static and dynamic puncture resistance, Shore-A hardness, tensile strength and elongation at break, seam strength and microscopic techniques. The obtained results confirm the EPDM geomembrane is still in good condition.

ince the publication of Tung’s (1981) seminal work on expatriate assign-ments of U.S. multinationals, there has been an explosion of interest in the subject (Harzing, 1995). Various aspects of international assignments have re-ceived much research attention, including the staffing criteria, training for cross-cultural encounters, performance of expatriates, and women’s suitability for international assign-ments.1 Despite the findings that women suc-ceed in male-dominated countries, there has only been a moderate increase in the use of women in international assignments.2 Thus, it is logical to ask why highly qualified women still are kept away from international

The work described here has optimized the catalyst composition and pretreatment operation for a low-alpha catalyst. In parallel, work has been conducted to design a high-alpha iron catalyst that is suitable for slurry phase synthesis. Studies have been conducted to define the chemical phases present at various stages of the pretreatment and synthesis stages and to define the course of these changes. The oxidation/reduction cycles that are anticipated to occur in large, commercial reactors have been studied at the laboratory scale. Catalyst performance has been determined for catalysts synthesized in this program for activity, selectivity and aging characteristics.
