We describe a general strategy to analyze sequence data and introduce SQ-Ados, a bundle of Stata programs implementing the proposed strategy. The programs include several tools for describing and visualizing sequences as well as a Mata library to perform optimal matching using the Needleman–Wunsch algorithm. With these programs Stata becomes the first statistical package to offer a complete set of tools for sequence analysis.

We apply Optimal Matching (OM) at two stages for the analysis of workdays and workweeks using data from the UK 2000 Time Use Survey. We only employ substitutions but no insertion or deletion when calculating the distance matrix between sequences. The costs are defined according to the transitional frequencies of events at a given time. Abstract This paper explores the school-to-work transition in the UK with the aim of achieving a richer understanding of individuals' choices and activities in the ve years after reaching school-leaving age. Through the technique of`optimal matching', we assess the degree of similarity between individuals' post-16 experiences in a way that captures the full detail of their ve-year histories. We consider individuals reaching school-leaving age between 1991 and 2003 and, on the basis of the measures of similarity, identify a small number of distinct transition patterns. Our results suggest that while 9 out of 10 young people have generally positive experiences post-16, the remaining individuals exhibit a variety of histories that might warrant policy attention. We assess the extent to which characteristics at age 16 can predict which type of trajectory a young person will follow. Our results conrm the predictive power of school attainment (grades), family background (parental qualications, parental and sibling labour market status) and gender. These characteristics are known to be strongly correlated across individuals and raise concerns about the degree of socio-economic polarisation in the transition from school to work.

teacher education, institutional roles and professional reality PHILIPP GROLLMANN Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, Bonn, Germany ABSTRACT What are quality vocational teachers? This article analyzes the different factors exerting an influence on the professional knowledge, practices and performance of teaching staff involved in technical and vocational education and training (TVET). The international variety of vocational teacher education patterns, profiles and recruitment practices is presented. Any assessment of the quality of teachers ’ work, be it in theory or practice, needs to be considered against the background of the institutional environment in which they practise. Hence, some common trends of institutional change within vocational education are introduced. Most particularly here, the author focuses on the professional reality of vocational teachers as made manifest in the conjoined elements of the knowledge of teachers and professional cultures. In doing so, the author draws on some empirical exemplars. The author shows how closely teacher education and the institutional contexts are entwined in the minds of teachers as well as in professional cultures. Finally, some conclusions are drawn as to what this implies for high-quality vocational teacher education and recruitment.

Abstract Analyzing school-to-work transitions is an important challenge for the specialists of the labor-market. The aim of this paper is to study the insertion of graduates and to identify the main career-paths typologies. We introduce a new methodology for clustering career-paths by combining statistical estimation of non-homogeneous Markov chains with selforganizing maps. The proposed methodology is tested on real-life data issued from the survey "Generation 98" elaborated by CEREQ, France

The second half of the twentieth century has been characterized by substantial changes in demographic behaviors. Among these transformations also the process by which adolescents and teenagers transition to adulthood has changed greatly in many countries of the Western world. All the events of the transition to adulthood have been delayed and life course trajectories became more diverse. There are some aspects concerning the mentioned changes that have not been extensively studied in the literature. This dissertation is a collection of three papers that have the aim to investigate these neglected aspects concerning life course trajectories of young adults. In particular, the first two papers look at trends over time in the achievement of economic independence, a crucial event in the transition to adulthood that has not received enough attention so far. The first paper is a cross-national comparison describing the situation in six different developed societies. The second paper studies only the United States, going back to the 1970s and tracing changes over time until 2007. The third paper, instead, focuses on the role of parental social class in the transition to adulthood. The exact mechanisms by which socio-economic status affects the transition to economic self-sufficiency and family formation are largely unknown. A better understanding of these issues can highlight additional information to understand why and how the transition to adulthood has changed in the last five
