Abstract: Web applications are evolving towards strong content-centered Web applications. The development processes and implementation of these applications are unlike the development and implementation of traditional information systems. In this paper we propose WebEngineering Method; a method for developing content management system (CMS) based Web applications. Critical to a successful development of CMS-based Web applications, is the adaptation to the dynamic business. We first define CMS-based Web applications and identify their specific characteristics. Combining these characteristics with situational factors in projects, we show that by taking parts of proven methods such as UML based Web-engineering (UWE) and the Unified Software Development Process (UP), a unique method can be assembled for situational development of CMS-based Web applications. We successfully validated the method at GX, a web-technology specialized in developing and implementing CMS-based Web applications. Future research focuses on optimizing the development method, and creating reference models and modeling tools for the development of CMS-based Web applications.

This paper reports on a case study of redesigning a legacy application for the Web using the Ubiquitous Web Applications Design Framework with an extended version of its Transaction Design Model (UWAT+). Web application design methodologies hold the promise of engineering high-quality and long-lived Web systems and rich Internet applications. However, many such techniques focus solely on green-field development, and do not properly address the situation of leveraging the value locked in legacy systems. The redesign process supported by UWAT+ holistically blends design recovery technologies for capturing the know-how embedded in the legacy application with forward design methods particularly well suited for Web-based systems. The case study highlights some of the benefits of using UWAT+ in this context, as well as identifying possible areas for improvement in the redesign process and opportunities for tool automation to support it. Web oriented software technology has provided access to information serving environments for a broad audience. This situation requires webbased software applications which satisfy increasing variety of requirements of the broad audience. Such variability can be found in requirements for information but also for environment which is serving the information. In this paper, we discuss a method which utilizes the UML-based feature modelling to support the need to model the variability. The information and environment configurations are modelled as common and variable features of application domain and environment concepts. Separation of feature models into application domain and environment allows us to select several configurations of environments to deliver particular information. The UML collaboration diagrams model collaborations between the application domain and environment concept and feature instances as an abstraction for presented information fragments in a web application.

This paper proposes a reverse engineering approach for abstracting conceptual user-centered models from existing Web applications to re-document them at a high level of abstraction and from a user perspective. The recovered models are specified by referring to the Ubiquitous Web Application (UWA) design methodology. UWA models are able to describe the structure of the application contents, the semantic relations among contents, the different views on contents the application offers to users, and the navigation paths and the navigation nodes used to present contents to users. The approach exploits existing reverse engineering methods and tools to extract fine grained structural information from the analyzed applications and abstracts UWA models from them. The architecture of a tool to support the reverse engineering approach is described and the results from some preliminary experiments are discussed.

Current hypermedia modeling techniques such as OOHDM, RMM or WebML rely on class-based domain models to guide the hypermedia construction process. In this paper we discuss the notion of role-oriented models as particularly suited for capturing different semantic contexts of hypermedia interfaces. The key idea is to allow resources to fill different roles which specify how these resources can be embedded in different link structures. After an overview of some class-oriented models, we discuss in detail the main features and benefits of role-oriented modeling compared to conventional class-oriented approaches, and make clear the distinction between attributes and links associated with objects via their natural types and attributes and relationships for an object specified by the different roles the object can fill. Two detailed examples, one discussing the use of role-oriented models for the specification of link structures in learning materials, another one for the specification of contexts for a tourist information system, show how these role-oriented models can be applied in different areas. Finally we show how such models can be easily expressed and implemented using the W3C standard for web annotation, RDFS, and show that a role-oriented semantics is actually closer to the intended use of RDFS schemas than the "default" class-oriented semantics.

One aspect of the development of Web-enabled systems that has received increasing attention is information modeling, particularly with respect to aspects such as navigation and content models. These models have however typically focused on modeling at a relatively low-level and have failed to address higher-level aspects, such as architectural and business process modeling. We have proposed WebML+, a set of formal extensions to an existing modeling language (WebML), which is able to form a bridge between higher level business models and lower level detailed designs. In this paper we provide guidelines for supporting the derivation of a WebML+ model from/to these different models, thereby providing a concrete link between them. We illustrate these guidelines with a detailed example. 1
