A wireless ad hoc network is often composed of a set V of n wireless devices distributed in a two-dimensional domain. For each wireless device (also called node) u ∈ V, there is a transmission region within which signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) is at least a threshold γ so that the signal transmitted by u can be correctly received by other nodes with high probability. The transmission region is often modeled as a disk centered at the node u. In addition, for each node u, there is an interference region within which the transmission from u makes the signal-to-interference-andnoise-ratio (SINR) of the legitimate receiver smaller than the threshold γ so that the legitimate receiver cannot correctly receive the message from the legitimate transmitter. In this paper, we first present new graph models to model the communication graphs and the interference graphs defined by wireless ad hoc networks with attention to interference-free channel assignment or scheduling. Then we propose some simple approximation algorithms and/or PTASs (polynomial time approximation scheme) to approximate several classical graph problems such as maximum independent set, minimum vertex cover and minimum vertex coloring in these graph models. In addition, we also discuss various possible applications for these simple approximation algorithms and/or PTASs in wireless ad hoc networks.

Abstract — In this paper we propose new techniques to improve scheduling performance in time-slotted superframe based ad hoc networks. Such channel access technology is used in the IEEE 802.15.3 and 802.15.4 standards. Building on the performance analysis of previous proposals, we enhance the scheduling algorithms with flow state signaling and burst eligibility decision, so as to exploit the features of the 802.15.3 architecture. We show by simulation that the scheduling algorithms extended with these special mechanisms achieve higher performance, with better channel utilization and lower power consumption. I.

Among several wireless network scenarios, the in-home environment is one of the more challenging in the last years. In particular, the Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) seems one of the most interesting application scenario, as that networks work in small area for delivering multimedia traffic. The IEEE 802.15.3 is the emerging standard for WPAN. This standard is designed to provide low complexity, low cost and low power-consumption for personal area networks that manage multimedia traffic, video and audio between different devices in a small area environment. The piconet is the basic topology structure of a WPAN and it is defined as group devices, where one of them is the PicoNet Coordinator (PNC). A PNC manages the synchronization and controls the data traffic of the system. This paper proposes an adaptive Medium Access Control (MAC) technique for high data-rate WPANs. The proposed system aims to maximize the performance of the WPAN in terms of throughput, considering multimedia traffic. I.

Abstract — Recently, there has been an increasing interest in developing 60 GHz wireless personal area networks (WPANs) for short-range high-speed wireless communications. Both industrial and standardization organizations such as IEEE 802.15.3c and IEEE 802.11ad are making considerable efforts to bring the very high data rate (up to several Gbps) WPANs into reality. In this work, we develop an NS-2 extension for simulating 60 GHz WPANs, based on which we conduct a comprehensive simulation study to investigate the impacts of antenna directivity and CSMA/CA operation modes on the throughput of 60 GHz WPANs. Observations from extensive simulation results provide valuable insights and guidelines in designing future MAC schemes for 60 GHz WPANs with directional antennas. I.

We analyze the capacity of ultra-wide band (UWB) wireless access networks supporting multimedia services by calculating the number of multimedia connections that can be supported in a UWB access network with IEEE 802.15.3 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol, considering the overheads from different layers. We then propose how to increase the capacity by improving the MAC protocol design and parameter setting. We also quantify the effectiveness of different approaches and derive the appropriate MAC protocol parameters such as the duration of contention period and contention free period in a superframe. Simulation results are given to demonstrate the accuracy of the analysis. Ó 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
