Abstract. The two fundamental aims of managing educational resources are to enable resources to be reusable and interoperable and to enable Web-scale sharing of resources across learning communities. Currently, a variety of approaches have been proposed to expose and manage educational resources and their metadata on the Web. These are usually based on heterogeneous metadata standards and schemas, such as IEEE LOM or ADL SCORM, and diverse repository interfaces such as OAI-PMH or SQI. Also, there is still a lack of usage of controlled vocabularies and available data sets that could replace the widespread use of unstructured text for describing resources. On the other hand, the Linked Data approach has proven that it offers a set of successful principles that have the potential to alleviate the aforementioned issues. In this paper, we introduce an architecture and prototype which is fundamentally based on (a) Linked Data principles and (b) Service-orientation to resolve the integration issues for sharing educational resources.

Abstract. Many recent works aim at developing methods and tools for the processing of semantic Web services. In order to be properly tested, these tools must be applied to an appropriate benchmark, taking the form of a collection of semantic WS descriptions. However, all of the existing publicly available collections are limited by their size or their realism (use of randomly generated or resampled descriptions). Larger and realistic syntactic (WSDL) collections exist, but their semantic annotation requires a certain level of automation, due to the number of operations to be processed. In this article, we propose a fully automatic method to semantically annotate such large WS collections. Our approach is multimodal, in the sense it takes advantage of the latent semantics present not only in the parameter names, but also in the type names and structures. Concept-to-word association is performed by using Sigma, a mapping of WordNet to the SUMO ontology. After having described in details our annotation method, we apply it to the larger collection of real-world syntactic WS descriptions we could find, and assess its efficiency.

Abstract. We present a goal-based approach for visualizing and browsing the search space of available Web services. A goal describes an objective that a client wants to solve by using Web services, abstracting from the technical details. Our visualization technique is based on a graph structure that organizes goal templates – i.e. generic and reusable objective descriptions – with respect to their semantic similarity, and keeps the relevant knowledge on the available Web services for solving them. This graph is generated automatically from the results of semantically enabled Web service discovery. In contrast to existing tools that categorize the available Web services on the basis of certain description elements, our tool allows clients to browse available Web services on the level of problems that can be solved by them and therewith to better understand the structure as well as the available resources in a domain. This paper explains the theoretic foundations of the approach and presents the prototypical implementation within the Web Service

Abstract. One of the crucial reasons for adding semantic descriptions to Web services is to enable intelligent discovery, removing the need for a human to manually search and browse textual descriptions in repositories of services, like UDDI or ebXML. The Web Service Modeling Ontology (WSMO) provides a conceptual model within which the function of a Web service can be described in terms of formalized pre- and postconditions over the information space and assumptions and effects related to the real world; however WSMO is very flexible in the way in which the Semantic Web Service developer can use these elements to describe the functionality of a service. Thus a number of approaches for effectively describing the offered function of a Web service and the requirements of users, along with methods to compare them have surfaced in the last number of years, leaving developers unsure of which approach to use and if it is possible to combine them. In this paper we introduce a framework within which these different approaches can be combined and present some new tools that can be used with this framework by the Semantic Web Service developer. 1

Business Activity Monitoring (BAM) aims to support the real-time analysis of business processes in order to improve the speed and effectiveness of business operations. Providing a timely, integrated high-level view on the evolution and well-being of business activities within enterprises constitutes a highly valuable analytical tool for monitoring, managing and hopefully enhancing businesses. However, the degree of automation currently achieved cannot support the level of reactivity and adaptation demanded by businesses. We argue that the fundamental problem is that moving between the business level and the IT level is insufficiently automated and suggest an extensive use of semantic technologies as a solution. In particular, we present SENTINEL a Semantic Business Process Monitoring tool that advances the state of the art in BAM by making extensive use of semantic technologies in order to support the integration and derivation of business level knowledge out of low-level audit trails generated by IT systems.
