Ontology mapping is seen as a solution provider in today's landscape of ontology research. As the number of ontologies that are made publicly available and accessible on the Web increases steadily, so does the need for applications to use them. A single ontology is no longer enough to support the tasks envisaged by a distributed environment like the Semantic Web. Multiple ontologies need to be accessed from several applications. Mapping could provide a common layer from which several ontologies could be accessed and hence could exchange information in semantically sound manners. Developing such mappings has been the focus of a variety of works originating from diverse communities over a number of years. In this article we comprehensively review and present these works. We also provide insights on the pragmatics of ontology mapping and elaborate on a theoretical approach for defining ontology mapping.

Schema/ontology matching is a critical problem in many application domains, such as, semantic web, schema/ontology integration, data warehouses, e-commerce, catalog matching, etc. Many diverse solutions to the matching problem have been proposed so far. In this paper we present a taxonomy of schema-based matching techniques that builds on the previous work on classifying schema matching approaches. Some innovations are in introducing new criteria which distinguish between matching techniques relying on diverse semantic clues. In particular, we distinguish between heuristic and formal techniques at schemalevel; and implicit and explicit techniques at element- and structure-level. Based on the classification proposed we overview some of the recent schema/ontology matching systems pointing which part of the solution space they cover.

Researchers in the ontology-design field have developed the content for ontologies in many domain areas. Recently, ontologies have become increasingly common on the WorldWide Web where they provide semantics for annotations in Web pages. This distributed nature of ontology development has led to a large number of ontologies covering overlapping domains, which researchers now need to merge or align to one another. The processes of ontology alignment and merging are usually handled manually and often constitute a large and tedious portion of the sharing process. We have developed and implemented Anchor-PROMPT---an algorithm that finds semantically similar terms automatically. Anchor-PROMPT takes as input a set of anchors---pairs of related terms defined by the user or automatically identified by lexical matching. AnchorPROMPT treats an ontology as a graph with classes as nodes and slots as links. The algorithm analyzes the paths in the subgraph limited by the anchors and determines which classes frequently appear in similar positions on similar paths. These classes are likely to represent semantically similar concepts. Our experiments show that when we use Anchor-PROMPT with ontologies developed independently by different groups of researchers, 75% of its results are correct.

Due to the availability on the Internet of a wide variety of sources of information on closely related topics, the problem of providing seamless, integrated access to such sources has become (again) a major research challenge. Although this problem has been studied for several decades, especially in the database community, there is a need for a more refined approach in those cases where the original sources maintain their own independent view of the world. In particular, we motivate with examples the utility of directed non-injective mappings between the individuals in the domains of multiple Information Sources.

With the grown availability of large and specialized online ontologies, the questions about the combined use of independently developed ontologies have become even more important. Although there is already a lot of research done in this area, there are still many open questions. In this paper we try to classify the problems that may arise into a common framework. We then use that framework to examine several projects that aim at some ontology combination task, thus sketching the state of the art. We conclude with an overview of the different approaches and some recommandations for future research. 1

A common problem during the life cycle of knowledge-based systems is that symbolically represented knowledge needs to be translated into some different form. Translation needs occur along a variety of dimensions, such as KR language syntax and expressivity, modeling conventions, representation paradigms, etc. As a tool to support the translation problem, we present the OntoMorph system. OntoMorph provides a powerful rule language to represent complex syntactic transformations, and it is fully integrated with the PowerLoom KR system to allow transformations based on any mixture of syntactic and semantic criteria. We describe OntoMorph's successful application as an input translator for a critiquing system and as the core of a translation service for agent communication. We further motivate how OntoMorph can be used to support knowledge base merging tasks.

Ontology is increasingly seen as a key factor for enabling interoperability across heterogeneous systems and semantic web applications. Ontology mapping is required for combining distributed and heterogeneous ontologies. Developing such ontology mapping has been a core issue of recent ontology research. This paper presents ontology mapping categories, describes the characteristics of each category, compares these characteristics, and surveys tools, systems, and related work based on each category of ontology mapping. We believe this paper provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of ontology mapping and points to various research topics about the specific roles of ontology mapping.

Abstract. With rising importance of knowledge interchange, many industrial and academic applications have adopted ontologies as their conceptual backbone. However, industrial and academic environments are very dynamic, thus inducing changes to application requirements. To fulfill these changes, often the underlying ontology must be evolved as well. As ontologies grow in size, the complexity of change management increases, thus requiring a wellstructured ontology evolution process. In this paper we identify a possible sixphase evolution process and focus on providing the user with capabilities to control and customize it. We introduce the concept of an evolution strategy encapsulating policy for evolution with respect to user’s requirements. 1
