It is assumed that companies that utilize sustainable supply chain management as a strategic tool in business management are likely to have a competitive edge over others. However, this is contrary to the Tea Industry in Kenya. The main purpose of this research was to establish the role of sustainable supply chain management as a strategic tool for competitive advantage in the tea industry in Kenya. The specific objective was to find out to what extent the supply chain collaborative strategy as a tool for competitive advantage is used by the companies in tea industry in Kenya. The mixed research design was used in the study. The target population was the tea companies in Kenya and the sample of eight Tea Companies were purposively selected for the study. Data collection was done by use of both structured questionnaires and oral interview to get the primary data while the secondary data was obtained by documentary analysis. The results finding indicated that sustainable supply chain management as a strategic tool contributes to the competitive advantage of Kenyan tea companies in the global market. The results provide information to the tea companies to come up with sustainable strategies in their supply chain management in order ensure the Kenyan tea remains competitive in the global market.

Supply Chain Management, the coordination of upstream and downstream flows of product, services, finances, and information from a source to a customer, has risen in prominence over the past fifteen years. The delivery of a product to the consumer is a complex process requiring action from several independent entities. An individual firm consists of multiple functional departments, each responsible for one aspect of customer service. In the traditional corporate structure of functional silos, there is little communication between Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Logistics, and yet these departments comprise three core supply chain processes of a firm. Ironically, managers report that it is easier for Purchasing to integrate with suppliers and Logistics to integrate with customers than it is for either group to integrate within the firm. This study develops and tests a model of factors that influence the level of internal integration of three key internal supply chain management functions: Purchasing, Operations, and Logistics. These three functions define the internal supply chain because

This study describes the design and implementation of a simulation role-playing game (RPG), the web-based Supply Chain Management Game (WSCMG), which provides an opportunity for business and management students to experience the business environment in a virtual context. In the design and development stage, generic supply chain (SC) activities were analyzed, and a web-based SC management (SCM) system developed to support the RPG. In the implementation stage, the game was tested on a group of undergraduate students specializing in the study of SCM. As part of the learning assessment, the student players were required to report their SC performance and sales figures using an inbuilt online evaluation system which also facilitated peer and tutor reviews. An evaluation was then conducted to collect students ’ and tutors ’ views on the game’s effective-ness. Positive feedback was received, supporting the proposition that the WSCMG can be an effective tool in facilitating self-, peer-, and tutor-directed teaching and learning. *This research was partly supported by the Hong Kong Polytechnic University under the project no. ...d hands-on experience in managing the global flow of goods and information along the SC. However, planning and implementing an SCM system is a very complex and challenging activity (Koh et al., 2006; =-=Power, 2005-=-; Tummala et al., 2006). Learning by experience gained outside the context of teacher-led instruction is highly valuable in acquiring the necessary knowledge of SCM (Samaddar & Kadiyala, 2006; Spekman...

The main purpose of this study was to examine the contributions of Green supply chain management practice on performance of Steel Manufacturing Companies in Kenya which are the key contributors to the economic development of the country. The metrics for measuring the company’s performance were the product quality and customer satisfaction. The descriptive research design was used in the formulation of knowledge on the contributions of Green supply chain management practice on the performance of Steel manufacturing Companies in Kenya and provided solutions to areas that needed improvement. Structured questionnaires and oral interviews research techniques was used to get primary data from the senior managers in production department, marketing department, Information Technology department and Supply chain department while scheduled interviews was used for firm’s procurement managers and observation checklists was used for comparison of records. Analytical research method was used to analyze secondary data and ex-post facto research design was used to report things the way they are. Both quantitative and qualitative research techniques were used during data presentation using inferential statistics to draw conclusions from the nominal measurement scale. Purposive sampling technique was used to identify and select eligible participants for the study. The null hypothesis formulated was that there is significant relationship between green supply chain management practice and the performance of steel

Abstract Supply chain (SC) management implies a large number of interactions and a great deal of cooperation between the organizations that make up the supply chain in order to fulfill the purposes of logistics processes such as supply, distribution and warehousing. Much research has been carried out to illustrate the advantages of coordinating these processes at different stages of supply chain planning. However, these studies appear to be separate efforts. This study proposes methodological guidelines for the coordinated planning of the supply chain in the context of the healthcare services, considering the global benefits to its members by using primary information collected at several health service institutions. The proposal also includes a mixed-integer programming model to show how organizational coordination contributes to a reduction of the overall costs throughout the chain. Keywords: supply chain, coordination, medical supply chain, medical operations management, healthcare supply chain, mixed-integer programing.

...the overall SC costs [13]. Such coordination involves not only the implementation of enterprise resource planning systems (ERP) and its associated links [14], but also the joint planning processes and the development of synchronized forecasts [15]. Coordination requires breaking down communication barriers and overcoming the reluctance to share information, it also requires aligning the different interests and management styles. All these requirements allow coordination to move towards an integrated management of chains that ultimately replaces any other functional process management approach [16]. Coordination is reflected when the members of a SC jointly minimize operating costs and share profits after production planning policies and programming operations have been deployed [17]. Typically, the literature distinguishes several strategies to achieve coordination of operations in an SC (e.g., purchasing policies, bulk discounts, inventory management, and lot sizes). However, few of these approaches have been applied to the sector of pharmaceutical SC (Medicines and medical Balcázar-Camacho et al / DYNA 83 (197), pp. 203-211. June, 2016. 205 supplies) in Latin American countries. The ...

Abstract Purpose Firms are increasingly resorting to responsible supply chain management as they align their economic success with socially-responsible initiatives in their value chain. This contribution suggests that there are opportunities for global corporations who are keen on integrating responsible practices into their business operations. It is in their interest to report about their responsible supply chain management, social performance and sustainable innovations to their stakeholders. Design/methodology/approach This review paper identifies future research avenues in the promising areas of responsible procurement and global supply chain management. Findings The corporations" differentiated strategies as well as their proactive engagement in responsible supply chain management can lead them to achieve a competitive advantage in the long term. the low-cost producers may be neglecting the marketplace stakeholders, including suppliers, distributors among others. Moreover, the smaller businesses" could not be in a position to follow responsible procurement practices as they may lack the scarce resources to do so. Originality/value This paper raises awareness about the integration of socially responsible behaviours and sustainable practices in business operations. It contends that a responsible supply chain management necessitates an improved relationship with suppliers and distributors in the value chain. This stakeholder engagement with ultimately create value to the businesses themselves.

...the businesses‟ long term prospects. A growing body of literature has noted the relationship between supply chain practices and business strategy (McManus, 2008; Cousins, 2005; Fombrun and Shanley, 1990), Those firms that implement and develop responsible supply chain practices are clearly pursuing differentiation strategies (McWilliams and Siegel, 2001), Therefore, “the supply chain function cannot be viewed in isolation from the firm and its competitive advantage” (Knudsen, 2003, p. 720; Watts et al., 1995), This suggests that the organisational goals could guide the supply chain practices (Power, 2005), and that the two variables must be coordinated (Tamas, 2000), Narasimhan and Carter (1998) argued that the supply chain strategy must support product and market characteristics, for firms to achieve a competitive advantage. They held that those firms, who adopted a differentiation / customisation strategy were choosing those suppliers who were characterised for their product innovation, technological leadership, total quality management and internal organisational integration. In contrast, they contended that the firms that pursued traditional manufacturing‐oriented strategies (low‐cost) pri...

Abstract: Supply chain management (SCM) has grown as a discipline since the field attracted attention in the 1980s. However, it is observed that effective implementation of SCM is limited because the current focus is too task-based and information-centric. The concept is often conflated, in practice, with subcontractor management, where numerical flexibility is pertinent. At the same time, consideration of human resources management (HRM) in SCM has been limited. Strategic fit within supply chains tends to emphasise taskbased numerical flexibility, rather than genuine consideration and development of human resources. On the other hand, HRM has, until recently, rarely taken into account interorganisational characteristics that typify the construction industry. Therefore, this research intends to plug the gap by examining the use of human resources in construction supply chains, with a view of developing good practice for HRM in construction SCM. To achieve this, a two-phase research methodology comprising a scoping phase and case study phase will be ensued.

...ay (1997) and Dyer and Nobeoka (2000) undertook research on Toyota and examined the impacts of supply chain development on employee relations. Thus, previous empirical studies discuss HRM only as consequences of SCM, rather than the consideration of HRM as a driver for effective SCM. Indeed, HRM is rarely examined in the way decisions are made in SCM. For example, Goffin et al. (2006), in a recent exploratory study, noted that while the literature extols the need for integration in the supply chain, the reality is that consideration of supplier competence is far from ideal (Scarbrough, 1998). Power (2005) purported that the adoption of strategic thinking across the supply chain is challenging since “this is easier said than done within a stand-alone organisation, let alone across a diverse and dispersed group of trading partners (p. 252)”. Even the literature on supplier development (Krause and Scannell, 2002) aimed at integrating supply chains has focussed on aligning business processes across multiple organisations, albeit with little emphasis on HRM. There is scope for exploring the role of HRM in driving effective SCM in construction, and how greater alignment and integration of HRM practi...

Abstract Sustainable development has made remarkable progress in establishing environmental and social sustainability towards operations management and the supply chain. Manufacturers in the late 1980's went beyond what was required in the legislation and went for a greener approach in their operations systems. The purpose of this paper is to briefly review the literature of the green supply chain management (GrSCM) over the last twenty years. The key themes that came out of the literature are: green operations, green design, green manufacturing, reverse logistics and waste management. This paper will briefly discuss these issues. This paper will also mention the reasons why organisations would opt for a green supply chain. This essay will then conclude that there is a gap in the literature in terms of the stakeholder views towards green supply chain management. Knowing the different stakeholders' views to greening initiatives requires qualitative study such as interviews -to portray the different views about the concept and how this would implicate management decisions.

...explain that the reason for this was the emergence of a globalised marketplace. Wood (1997) argues that firms need to become more integrative amongst other firms to reduce the vulnerability of the supply chain. There are various case studies where firms are becoming more integrative to their supply chain partners. Lamming (1993) and Womack, Jones and Roos (1990) mention the Japanese automotive industry and the Italian craft-based industry as basic examples. Lean and Just-In-Time (JIT) Management have added factors that helped enhanced the operational processes of the supply chain (Wood, 1997; Power, 2005). The requirement for organisations to become actively responsive to the needs of customers has increasingly been important (Christopher, 2000). Power (2005) observes that speed (delivering customer demand quickly), Volume 7 2009 Otago Management Graduate Review Fortes 53 agility (responsiveness to customer demand) and leanness (doing more with less) are the contributing factors that would make firms more competitive. Abstract-During the last decades supply chain issues have attracted researchers and industrialists' attention especially in manufacturing-based industries. Enhancing supply chain performance can significantly affect firm's competitive position within competitive markets and provide the enterprise with competitive advantage over its rivals. Based on the existing literature in the context of supply chain, this study tries to present a model for supply chain performance. The conceptual model presented in this study consists of supply chain design, information sharing, flexibility, delivery and supply chain performance and the electronics industry in Malaysia is selected as the population of this study in order to test the model by using the data collected from the industry. The model is investigated through path analysis and then by using factor analysis, Friedman test and paired sign test the variables are identified and the priority of each variable is investigated. The model presented by this study can be employed as a platform by Malaysian electronics manufacturing companies in order to improve their supply chain performance and obtain competitive advantage within local and foreign markets.

...all along the supply chain [4].Indeed, effective information sharing can be taken into account as one of the most significant abilities of supply chain process [32] by which efficient operation of the firm as a single partner of supply chain is considerably affected and more importantly firm does not need to possess other parts of the supply chain in order to operate more efficiently. Furthermore, integration and coordination across supply chain can be well provided through information sharing [40].Failures can occur in case of information delays, shortage or distortion across the supply chain[4, 25].Shorter order cycle time and lower total cost can be provided through applying higher level of information sharing by firms operating within the supply chain [21]. It is imperative to mention that in any supply chain, what information is shared, with whom it is shared and how it is shared can influence the impact of information sharing on supply chain performance [3,20,15]. As these issues should be initially considered in the supply chain design process, the impact of information sharing on supply chain performance must be evaluated together with the design considerations. Therefore, the des...
